I am a Chaotic Neutral Wood Elf, 14th lvl Ranger(6) with levels of DeepWood Sniper(5) and 2 lvls of barb and fighter. I need a bow to help me do more damage. I only have about 30k - 40k gold to spend AT MOST. I do not really have to hard of a time hitting much, but I do have a hard time doing good damage and a hard time with ANYTHING that has damage reduction. I'm not looking to kill anything specific, just looking for the best all around bow I can get for 30k gold!

SUGGESTIONS!? :D

Oh and I have weapon Focus in Comp. Longbow, so I suppose I am looking for a composite longbow. A couple of suggestions would be nice! :)

Complete Warrior has a ranged magical enhancement that makes your arrows do an extra d8 and go through their target, to any more enemies in a straight line behind them - basically imagine you are extending your line of sight line past through the target. My book is at home, so I cant remember what its called.

It reminded me of Indiana Jones and his Luger :D

The Splitting enhancement from Champions of Ruin is sweet. Every time you shoot it splits into two arrows, so that doubles everything. strength, enchantment, sneak attacks, precision damage, etc etc etc cause its not a volley like manyshot, you make an attack roll for each one

Arms and Equipment guide has quite a few specific magical bows, as does another book I have...but I'll have to have a look.

I've never actually used a specific magical bow, so my memory is hazy.

It's called exit wounds, +2 modifier. Then I would put in one of the elemental damage modifers for +1 for 1d6 elemental damage. Get a strength rated composite long bow.
Along with the mandatory +1 enhancement you have a +4 bow (32,000gp) that will give you 2d8 + 1d6 + 3 (16 str)

I kind of like:

Seeking

Only ranged weapons can have the seeking ability. The weapon veers toward its target, negating any miss chances that would otherwise apply, such as from concealment. (The wielder still has to aim the weapon at the right square. Arrows mistakenly shot into an empty space, for example, do not veer and hit invisible enemies, even if they are nearby.)

Strong divination; CL 12th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, true seeing; Price +1 bonus. No special books required; this is in the DMG/SRD.

Archers should have less trouble with damage reduction than most: simply get a quiver of ehlonna and pack it with different kinds of arrows: alchemical silver, cold iron, +1 holy, adamantine... You can keep a few magical special-material arrows around, or just have someone magic-up your quiverful of arrows.

Another useful trick is to keep a handful of bane arrows around. Have several different bane types for the creature types you fight most often (heck, if nothing else, humanoid/human). Don't invest too heavily in a single type; just enough to have a full round of heavy-duty arrows for stupendous damage when you need a really heavy punch. (Note: you may wish to fire a normal arrow with your lowest BAB attack, since it's most likely to miss.)

you could make your own bow (or have it made). You could for example put a use activated crystal shard (to stay a bit bowlike) on it. power level(1)Xmanifester level(10 for example)X2000(use activated)=20000gp. This would do 10d6 piercing damage and depending on your DM it could be a touch attack or not and in addition to your normal damage or not. Depends on how you formulate what the bow does i guess. If you don't use psionics you could use spells like magic missile to do some extra damage.

Me personally I'd take the great comp. longbow from the complete worrior... just because it does 1d10 damage and incr. 130ft if you could get your hands on a magical one then your all set. Or even a mighty composite that way your dealing a +3 to damage also. Or the Raptor bow relic from the complete divine, but I can't remember the stats on it off the top of my head, but yeah thats a good bow. :D

Get a strength rated composite long bow. +700g
mandatory +1 enhancement
+3 modifier Splitting (champions of Ruin p42)
you have a +4 bow (32,700gp)
Then buy a bunch or +1 Frost Arrows 167g each and watch them split
The arrows would be expensive but well worth the extra damage.

The Lone Drow: Companions of the Hall (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=books/fr/lonedrowstats)
Quiver of Anariel:Quivers of Anariel appear to be typical arrow containers capable of holding a score of arrows. However, the quivers automatically replenish themselves with standard or magical arrows, such that they are always full. Some quivers also create arrows made of special materials, such as adamantine, cold iron, or alchemical silver.

Once an arrow it taken from the quiver, it must be used within 1 round or it vanishes.

Moderate conjuration; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, magic weapon, minor creation; Price 28,000 gp (standard arrows), 29,000 gp (masterwork arrows), 32,000 gp (+1 arrows), 44,000 gp (+2 arrows), 64,000 gp (+3 arrows), 92,000 gp (+4 arrows), 128,000 gp (+5 arrows); Add an additional +6,000 gp for adamantine arrows, +4,005 gp for cold iron arrows, or +200 gp for alchemical silver arrows; Weight 1 lb.

I think you mean the greatbow. Which is not an option here, since TrackStar said that he has a feat invested in the longbow. The additional point of damage is not worth the two feats (weapon focus (longbow) and exotic weapon proficiency (greatbow)) that he would have to burn.

Lessee here...

Grab you a Quiver of Ehlonna (1,800 gp) and get it enchanted as a wondrous item to match a scabbard of keen edges (16,000 gp) for a total of 17,800 gp spent on the item. Then, 3 times a day, you get arrows that crit on a 19-20/x3. And you don't have to burn a feat.

That's one idea.

Weapon enchantments.

The Oathbow in the DMG is hard to beat at 25,600 gp.

A +1 mighty (+3) composite longbow of wounding is a decent idea vs. anything that bleeds. When you rapid shot (esp. with imp. rapid shot) you'll be putting at least 2 arrows into an enemy a round. That kind of bleeding (1 point of Constitution damage per HIT) gets deadly to anything living really quickly. Manyshot while backing up is a tactic fatal to a single foe that refuses to seek cover. When you couple the damage you're doing (1d8+4) plus the -1 hp per level from constitution loss... They'll be dead soon.

Consider boots of speed to get an extra attack a round out of your full attack actions.

Finally, one of the BEST ways for an archer to get around DR is the Order of the Bow Initiate. The extra +1d8s he gets punches through even heavy DR.

Good luck!

i thought it was ruled precision based damage doesnt affect creatures if the original damage doesnt penetrate the DR
It is precision based damage, just like sneak attack, but, just like sneak attack, it is not stopped whrn the primary damage does not go through DR. If a rogue does 1d2+1 normal damage and +5d6 sneak attack damage against a werewolf, but without a silver weapon, he does not bypass the DR, but the extra sneak attack damage will help him damage the beast in that it does enough damage to break through the DR. Same thing with the OotBI.

Arrows are ranged weapons and cannot be keen . . .

Multiple magical enchantments on a single item cost +50% cost . . .

Scabbard of keen edges is usable on command (a standard action), and only one arrow drawn from that would be keen (but it would be keen for the duration of a normal keen edges spell).

Wounding is only an enhancement for melee weapons.

Wow.

You're right about the keen and wounding abilities. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank goodness you can't have a set of vorpal arrows by the RAW (shudder).

I think it's stupid that arrows cannot have the wounding ability. It fits.

I think it's stupid that arrows cannot be keened, but rapiers can. It doesn't fit.

You are, however, incorrect about the +50% cost on combining effects on magic items. You are referring to the section entitled "Adding New Abilites" on pg. 288 of the DMG. According to the first paragraph, you can add new abilities to a magic item at cost.

The second paragraph amends this statement by stipulating that "if the item is one that occupies a specific place on a character's body (see Magic Items on the Body, page 214), the cost of adding any additional ability to that item increases by 50%."

A quiver does not occupy one of those slots listed on the table on page 214. It does not incur the +50% cost modifier.

I pretty much agree on both counts. I'm just assuming that the reason they chose not to allow those two for ranged weapons was some sort of balance factor. For Keen I can't think of a reason, but wounding would obviously be far better for archers, in that they tend to be more accurate with more attacks than your typical melee fighter.

What I've always wondered is what happens when a dagger has wounding on it. If it is thrown, does the wounding simply not count for that attack because it is suddenly a ranged weapon? . . . Can you imagine the butt-kicking that could be dished out by a dual-wielding dagger thrower with wounding knives?

Go grab an Arms and Equipment Guide. For around 30k, you can get the Bow of Force. It's a +2 Composite (+3) Longbow. Seems overpriced? Hell no, it turns all your arrow's damage into a Force effect!

Hmmm, bypasses all DR. What monsters are immune to Force? O, there is the Force Dragon which has a CR in the 30's.

Seriously, this is the absolute best bow you could buy. You will always do full damage to the monster despite any DR or spell effects he might have.

True, true; a good point. My mistake.

Apologies for revisiting old ground.

The daggers won't lose wounding (or any other ability) just because the're being thrown "Some of the weapons listed as mellee weapons(for example daggers) can be used as ranged weapons. In this case their enhancement bonus applies to either type of attack"(DMG p221). Likewise since arrows are ammunition for a ranged weapon rather than a purely ranged weapon, so I can't see any reason to disallow wounding arrows either.

I think the key point here is that just because the description of the Wounding ability omits the magic words "Bows, crossbows and slings so crafted bestow the Wounding quality on their ammunition", doesn't mean that amunition isn't eligible.

And yes I can imagine the butt-kicking that could be dished out by a dual-wielding dagger thrower with wounding knives - at 18 000 gp/ Knife I should hope so.

Ah, I had never seen that quote before. That solves the conundrum, then. But I didn't meant that the daggers would lose the wounding ability, only that it would not apply for a ranged attack. Sorry for the confusion.

Hmm . . . that quote, it talks about enhancement bonuses, though. Are you sure it is not merely referring to the enhancement bonus (+X) of the weapon, rather than the special abilities of the weapon?

Either way, I would definitely not allow wounding on arrows. Even at 18,000 gold a shot, dual-wielding knife thrower would dominate at high levels. We don't need to allow archers to do the same at low levels. 10 +1 wounding arows would cost a mere 3,600 gold (and change, for masterwork). Assuming all of them hit, ten con damage is . . . significant. You could easily kill a BBEG with that and only a few hits from the front-line melee in two rounds.

No. My gosh, no. Do you people seriously never stop with your true striking enhancements? I swear, I am so sick of hearing about enchanting your weapon with true strike for 2,000 gold, or even 10,000 gold. A +20 modifier to attack and damage costs 8,000,000 gold. You do not use the spell guideline formulas first. You compare the cost to equivalent items. Spell guideline formulas should be used last.

Hey, I'm looking for a good bow, too- not for now, for eventually.

I'm not looking really at OotBI, too many levels, not That much gain imho, rather have special abilities than extra d8s myself. Would like to help a bit, though, with a good bow. Exit wound is an Obvious choice, Great ability.

What else? Elemental ones are cool. The seeking arrows- they Only negate cover, right? So, it would Not be broken (nor really that useful) to have exit wounds combined with seeking, since- were he to try to hit a target beyond a solid obstacle (where exit wounds stops), he would have to call it his target, thus it would avoid cover, in the form of the intervening creatures, otherwise, it merely negates cover for those creatures on the path to a solid object, and since the intervening creatures don't count as cover anyway, the extra cost justifies it to the point of me not wanting it.

The arrows of force seems like a good idea if DR is a problem. Not sure if it will be or not.

What else adds Damage, of any kind, or helps in direct damage output, that can be applied to a bow? So far a +2 Composite Longbow (not greatbow, as I want mounted archery an option) with one random Elemental and Exit Wounds on it seems like the best bet for non-ridiculous cost bows. Any other ideas/ options?

Here's a couple more copper peices.

Do you have or have you considered Quickdraw? Because Quickdraw + the Quiver of Elhona (AKA the golf bag fo power) is about options. Options are what the practical combat archer is about.

I think everyone on this thread has sugested some great enhancements but lets face it +1 Holy Seeking Flaming Burst Mighty Greatbow just to expensive and when do you need all the features at once?

OTH _one_ Quiver of Elhona lets you store upto six bows and 60 arrows. Quickdraw lets you replace you current at will.

What does our +1 Holy Seeking Flaming Gaint Bane Mighty comp Longbow cost? As much as a +1 Holy Mighty comp longbow and + 1 Seeking Mighty comp longbow and +1 Flaming comp longbow, along with a selection of arrows with effects such as Bane(Giant), silver, Adamantine etc and perhaps low poundage bow for when your PC gets strength drained.

One last point does your gm insist that you buy ammunition in lots of 50? If not being able able to buy single or small numbers of Arrows with effects such as Brilliant Energy can make a huge difference.

IF your gm is ammenable he may even allow you to carry more than one Quiver of Elhona. Think aboubt it

no, my gosh, no. it cost no where near that. granted i dont own a 3.5 dmg to reference but my 3.0 says its spell lvl x caster lvl x 2000 + 5 per xp. now lets see 1x1x2000 + 400 is......2400. i know it might be a little different in 3.5 but i know its similar. and ah ture strike doesnt make ur weapon a +20 weapon (which is impossible), it merely gives u a +20 to atk not dmg.

and also the whole relic thing is really at the dm's discretion(sp) so anyone (if the dm ok's it) can use raptor arrows.

Try reading his post. It's addressed. A +20 enhancement costs a tonne; approximately 60% of that cost is from the +20 to hit, and 40% is from the +20 damage. This is due to the fact that attack bonus is far more important than damage, generally speaking, so this is a personal DM judgement call.
Thus, a True Strike Bow would cost appropriately. It doesn't automatically cost less because of a chart in the DMG. The chart is for guidelines - it's used to fall back on if no appropriate cost can otherwise be figured. +20 to attack is worth as much as has been stated.

It's got a slightly different name in the SRD due to the OGL, but:

From the SRD:
Efficient Quiver: This appears to be a typical arrow container capable of holding about twenty arrows. It has three distinct portions, each with a nondimensional space allowing it to store far more than would normally be possible. The first and smallest one can contain up to sixty objects of the same general size and shape as an arrow. The second slightly longer compartment holds up to eighteen objects of the same general size and shape as a javelin. The third and longest portion of the case contains as many as six objects of the same general size and shape as a bow (spears, staffs, or the like). Once the owner has filled it, the quiver can produce any item she wishes, as if from a regular quiver or scabbard. The efficient quiver weighs the same no matter what’s placed inside it.

So you can store 60 arrows/bolts/other-arrow-shaped-things, 18 javelins/other-javelin-shaped-thing, 6 bows/spears/staffs/other-bow-shaped-things...
And you can produce any item you wish, as if from a regular quiver (free action) or scabbard (move-equivalent action, unless with Quick Draw or as part of a normal move action and +1 BAB)...

So basically you can have any arrow you need, or any ranged weapon (javelin, dart, whatever) or any projectile weapon (longbow, even spear!) you want. Keeping a spear inside to draw as a free action to have in case an enemy gets into a nice charging position could be surprising, too :P

You know could get Spell Storing on either the Bow or arrows and just use True Strike that way:)

J - ducks, runs for cover
Spell Storing is only for melee weapons.

Spell Storing: A spell storing weapon allows a spellcaster to store a single targeted spell of up to 3rd level in the weapon. (The spell must have a casting time of 1 standard action.) Any time the weapon strikes a creature and the creature takes damage from it, the weapon can immediately cast the spell on that creature as a free action if the wielder desires. (This special ability is an exception to the general rule that casting a spell from an item takes at least as long as casting that spell normally.) Once the spell has been cast from the weapon, a spellcaster can cast any other targeted spell of up to 3rd level into it. The weapon magically imparts to the wielder the name of the spell currently stored within it. A randomly rolled spell storing weapon has a 50% chance to have a spell stored in it already.

Strong evocation (plus aura of stored spell); CL 12th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, creator must be a caster of at least 12th level; Price +1 bonus.

Ignoring the fact that truestrike technically cannot be cast into a spellstoring weapon (I would personally get rid of that as a DM), casting true strike with a spellstoring weapon would be utterly pointless, since you would cast the spell on the creature you were attacking as soon as you hit.

no, my gosh, no. it cost no where near that. granted i dont own a 3.5 dmg to reference but my 3.0 says its spell lvl x caster lvl x 2000 + 5 per xp. now lets see 1x1x2000 + 400 is......2400. i know it might be a little different in 3.5 but i know its similar. and ah ture strike doesnt make ur weapon a +20 weapon (which is impossible), it merely gives u a +20 to atk not dmg.

No. The rule is to use the guidelines last. You compare the prices of similar items before using the guidelines. A +20 sword is similar in cost to the +20 bonus from truestrike (although, admittedly, true strike has a better type, with the insight bonus), so the most comparable price is 4,800,000 gold.

From the 3.5 SRD:
Not all items adhere to these formulas directly. The reasons for this are several. First and foremost, these few formulas aren’t enough to truly gauge the exact differences between items. The price of a magic item may be modified based on its actual worth. The formulas only provide a starting point. The pricing of scrolls assumes that, whenever possible, a wizard or cleric created it. Potions and wands follow the formulas exactly. Staffs follow the formulas closely, and other items require at least some judgment calls.

Unfortunately, I do not have my DMG with me, so I cannot find the text that states precisely what I want. That is similar, though. Of course, nothing but the word of God will probably deter you, so I don't know why I am bothering.

and also the whole relic thing is really at the dm's discretion(sp) so anyone (if the dm ok's it) can use raptor arrows.
Yes. That is true. It is also true to say that using HPs are a DM's discretion, and that you can, if you so chose, play with no HPs and just allow everyone to never die. So, yes, I am well aware that the DM can allow anything he wants. Of course he can. He's the DM. But if you plan on using the rules the way they are meant to be used, then you freaking use the rules, the way they are meant to be used. If you don't use the rules properly, then don't be giving people on the boards advice about what to do or how to play their game, since most of use like to follow the RAW, or, at the very least, the spirit of the RAW.

I will also point out that, without the relic restrictions of those arrows, they will cost significantly more then the listed price. Class, spell slot, alignment, and deity restrictions all decrease the cost of the item. Don't play with just half of the rules, for goodness sake. Especially not just the half that benefits you.

I never said it did. Had you read my post, instead of skimming it, or just ignoring it, then you would know that. I am not going to repost it here; that would be a waste of my time. Go scroll up and read what I posted.

And, if you play epic, which I am just going to assume is not at all likely, since you throw around true striking weapons and raptor arrows ( ), you would know that a +20 weapon is not impossible, and that weapons have no theoretical limit to enhancement bonuses.

Try reading his post. It's addressed.
Yes, thank you. I put forth the time and energy to address what I knew would be his arguments and complaints, and the fact that he didn't even bother to read them is a trifle annoying.

Burrowing arrows from CW can be very interesting. Especially if your DM lets you combine the effects with the exit wound ability. Also if you have some money left over you should invest in a pandemonic silver arrow(unfortunatly they are very pricy.

It's got a slightly different name in the SRD due to the OGL, but:

Do you have any item you want because you put them in there? Or do you just fill it with anything and then you can have any type of arrow or weapon you can think up?

Is it infinite ammo? Whats the deal with all of that?

All it sounds like is a bag of holding that gives quick draw... is that right?

First you need to put the stuff inside, then you can take it out. It's not infinite ammo and it's not giving quick draw. It's just a spezialised bag of holding which presents you the items you want to draw without the need to look around.
