| cato07-22-07, 11:23 PM | Would be interesting to compile a list of the best displays of skills with various weapons in movies or other media. I'll start off with Two-Weapon fighting and the last fight scene from shanghai knights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i9Za8Bxy6E |
| Jungingen07-23-07, 12:17 AM | First of all, Tom Cruise sucks. And don't even get me started on katanas and samurai. That said, honestly my favorite sword scene from a film has to be the bokken scene in Last Samurai. It was shot quite nicely and the choreography is taut and down-to-earth. Certainly not the most extravagant, vulgar display of high fantasy swordsmanship, but that's precisely what I like about it. High marks for realism in a grossly unrealistic genre. |
| foxtail07-23-07, 09:30 AM | Best use of Ride-By Attack: Jackie Chan vs. the hovercraft in the climax of "Rumble In The Bronx." |
| Steely_Dan07-23-07, 09:55 AM | First of all, Tom Cruise sucks. …Large amounts of schlong? I've heard about that… |
| Malchius07-23-07, 10:00 AM | Monk/Thief Acrobat is perfectly displayed by the guy in Ong-Bak, forgot his name though. |
| CrazyOzzy07-23-07, 12:09 PM | -Equilibrium (Christian Bale) : Gun-Kata. Modern reference but very skillful. Edit: some movies I liked for realistic hand to hand combat : Kingdom of Heaven Last of the Mohicans 300 (Just kidding) |
| Ainamacar07-23-07, 12:09 PM | Monk/Thief Acrobat is perfectly displayed by the guy in Ong-Bak, forgot his name though. Tony Jaa. I watched the movie this weekend. :) |
| maskimus07-23-07, 01:20 PM | To see someone who maxed out their Jump ranks and took skill focus Jump and took the +2/+2 feat that includes jump, see the openning sequence of Casino Royal.(The Daniel Craig version, Not the Woody Allen version:P ) |
| Dalthbar07-23-07, 01:26 PM | Troy & Braveheart: basically all non-oriental-themed combat feats ;) |
| cato07-23-07, 01:59 PM | To see someone who maxed out their Jump ranks and took skill focus Jump and took the +2/+2 feat that includes jump, see the openning sequence of Casino Royal.(The Daniel Craig version, Not the Woody Allen version:P ) A similar guy appears as a french bad guy in live free or die hard, but what this thread is mostly focused on is weapon skill. |
| Rykler07-23-07, 04:06 PM | Last of the mohichans is my favorite...especially the huge ambush scene and in the end when they kill magwa. |
| aelryinth07-23-07, 04:25 PM | A similar guy appears as a french bad guy in live free or die hard, but what this thread is mostly focused on is weapon skill. The skill is called Free Running, and is actually a demonstration of the Tumble skill (enabling movement over difficult terrain; reducing fall/jump damage; synergy bonuses from Jump, Tumble and Balance all working together.) JAckie Chan does great Tumble movements in several of his movies...I'm reminded of the one scene where he walks up to a closed gate, hops back and forth between the pillars to the side, goes right over the gate, and continues without breaking stride (Condor, was it?). There was another one where he bounced between a wire fence and a stone wall and got to the top of a 15 or 20' wall in about 3 seconds. There's two scenes in Rumble in the Bronx where he's ducking and dodging the gang bangers, and you can see why ranks in Tumble improve your Defensive Fighting and Total Defense. Lord, trying to hit someone like that would be frustrating. A lot of the OA high DC tumble moves are based on the kind of stuff he pulls off in his films:) ===Aelryinth |
| EiketheRogue07-23-07, 04:25 PM | Legolas has pretty good bow skillz o_o maybe he got some bow feats? lol |
| UnknownMourner07-23-07, 06:43 PM | Darth F'in Maul. I've heard On-Bak (sp?) is the shizznit as well. The French Film Banilieu 13 (District 13) is like 60% the French wall acrobatics. It started among the poor muslim kids in France (and elsewhere I'm sure) and became a big fad. I forget it's name. If you want to see redonkulous amounts of that stuff, check it out. It was art house unfortunately. The acting and plot are about pretty whack though. |
| StruckingFuggle07-23-07, 06:57 PM | The French Film Banilieu 13 (District 13) is like 60% the French wall acrobatics. It started among the poor muslim kids in France (and elsewhere I'm sure) and became a big fad. I forget it's name. It's called Parkour. |
| tafkamhokie07-23-07, 09:08 PM | Opening scene in Lord of the Rings where Sauron (sp? that was him, right? never was a big LotR fan) whacks about 6 warriors with one swing. Best visual representation of Great Cleave I've ever seen. Also, to those who still think Strength should be used for intimidate: scene in The Princess Bride where Inego and Fezig have cornered the Prince's marshall up against the gate. Inego says "give us the gate key," he responds "I have no gate key," then Inego responds "Fezig, tear his arms off." Notice that while Fezig was the one with a 26+ Str (and an 8 Cha), it was Inego doing the effective intimidate check. Fezig was most certainly giving an assist, though. |
| Irving07-23-07, 09:30 PM | Jackie Chan does great Tumble movements in several of his movies...I'm reminded of the one scene where he walks up to a closed gate, hops back and forth between the pillars to the side, goes right over the gate, and continues without breaking stride (Condor, was it?). There was another one where he bounced between a wire fence and a stone wall and got to the top of a 15 or 20' wall in about 3 seconds. ...and in the outtake, he screws up this trick several times before getting it right, which goes to show it's got a pretty massive DC to pull off. |
| Jungingen07-23-07, 10:51 PM | ...and in the outtake, he screws up this trick several times before getting it right, which goes to show it's got a pretty massive DC to pull off. That's no big deal for Jackie, since you can Take 20 during filming. |
| cato07-23-07, 11:58 PM | ...and in the outtake, he screws up this trick several times before getting it right, which goes to show it's got a pretty massive DC to pull off. Don't forget the outtakes you are talking about are in a film where jackie is starting to get a bit old. |
| Jungingen07-24-07, 01:43 AM | Don't forget the outtakes you are talking about are in a film where jackie is starting to get a bit old. It turns out that Jackie Chan turned Old in April. That extra -2 to all physical stats is really going to hurt in his future movies. |
| cato07-24-07, 03:30 AM | It turns out that Jackie Chan turned Old in April. That extra -2 to all physical stats is really going to hurt in his future movies. Well he didnt turn old in a particular date but you can see the movie with the wall thing he doesnt have the nimbleness he used to have when he was younger, its only natural to gradually lose your physique as you grow older :/. |
| Jungingen07-24-07, 06:00 AM | Well he didnt turn old in a particular date but you can see the movie with the wall thing he doesnt have the nimbleness he used to have when he was younger, its only natural to gradually lose your physique as you grow older :/. Sorry, but according to RAW Jackie Chan became Old when he turned 53 in April. -2 to all physical stats and +1 to all mental stats. |
| dknight10007-24-07, 06:17 AM | Extra skill points for jackie - speak language maybe? :P |
| cato07-24-07, 06:36 AM | Sorry, but according to RAW Jackie Chan became Old when he turned 53 in April. -2 to all physical stats and +1 to all mental stats. You are missing the point! jackie is not human!! ^^ He is some sort of martial tall halfling! or even a race of his own :) |
| Malchius07-24-07, 06:43 AM | Jet Li in Fearless, perfect use of the three-sectioned staff in my opinion. |
| lukelightning07-24-07, 07:36 AM | Puss-in-boots in Shrek 2. Perfect use of the variant intimidate rule... using cuteness instead of fear. |
| cato07-24-07, 04:41 PM | An interesting display of dagger throwing can be seen in "the flying daggers" but its not very realistic :p |
| penchant07-25-07, 03:18 PM | Charlton Heston in The Agony and the Extacy. oh... Weapon Skillz. Buntaro's display of archery in Shogun. Jackie Chan's varied use of styles in Shoalin Wooden Fighting Men. Donnie Yen in anything he does. Basil Rathbone, (considered the greatest swordsman in Hollywood history) in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) or The Court Jester(1955). |
| Rasmus Wagner07-25-07, 04:31 PM | James Bond usually showed of his Appraise skill. The Usual Suspects, for Bluff. |
| cato07-25-07, 07:18 PM | Charlton Heston in The Agony and the Extacy. Wow, excellent post, exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for :D |
| darth_borehd11-14-07, 07:59 PM | Puss-in-boots in Shrek 2. Perfect use of the variant intimidate rule... using cuteness instead of fear. I thought he was more using a bluff check to catch them flat-footed. |
| RobbyPants11-15-07, 01:18 PM | Best use of Jump (probably augmented with the Mental Leap feat) - Morpheus jumping from one building to the next in The Matrix Worst use of Jump - Neo attempting the same and failing. :P Best use of Craft (Awesome and Win) - About any fight scene with Jason Bourne in it ;) |
| 1 ton ghost11-15-07, 01:54 PM | Use Magic Device: "Hellraiser". no one has successfully completed the puzzle box to open a Gate to Heaven, it's always Hell. very high DC i guess Diplomacy: "Legend". Jack buys some time w/ Mucklebones (troll/skragg) so she won't eat him right away. catches her flat-footed. Craft (Weaponsmithing): "Kill Bill I." the Hatori Hanzo katanas i guess. maybe Ash's improvised chainsaw appendage in "Evil Dead" Bluff: "Resevoir Dogs". Mr. Orange and the 'commode scene'. "Usual Suspects", Verbal Kint/Kaiser Sose. "Angelheart", Mr. Cyphier. Climb: "The Descent". seriously harrowing Underdark-esque athletics. Hide: "28 Days Later".
