I play a monk and I would like to become the ultime night watchman for my party (no one else could or want to do this in the party).

Beside a ring of sustenance to stay awake, I also want to boost (with items) my listen and spot skills. If possible I would also like to have a scent-like ability and darkvision.

Can anyone can help me to find the best items to do this. The fewer items I would need to do that, the more I can have for other purpose.

If there is other abilities or skills that could help me or other way than items to do so, feel free to write it.

1) Eyes of the Eagle grant a +5 competence bonus on Spot checks
2) The rod of Alertness might be useful for you.
3) An intelligent item (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/intelligentItems.htm) can have:
..a) 120 ft. darkvision, blindsense, and hearing
..b) 10 ranks in Spot and listen
..c) can cast faerie fire on spotted individuals
..d) can have other detection type abilities (detect evil, undead, scrying, etc.)

My recommendation is using intelligent Eyes of the Eagle (maybe using them like an HUD)

Scent is a Druid 2/Ranger 1 spell which gives the target the Scent ability. A custom item that provides this spell on a continuous basis would cost 18,000 gp if crafted by a Druid. It's theoretically possible for a Ranger to craft this item at a caster level of 2, bringing the price down to 6,000 gp, but Rangers with Craft Wondrous Item are exceedingly rare. Given the short shrift the sense of smell is given in D&D, I wouldn't expect such an item to be very expensive.

For darkvision the standard item is the Goggles of Night providing 60' (DMG). But there are also the Belt of Dwarvenkind (DMG) for 60', the Badge of the Svirfneblin (Magic Item Compendium) for 30', Goggles of Draconic Vision (MIC) with 60' darkvision and low-light vision, Green-Eyed Gauntlet (Magic of Faerun) with 60', Moonstone Mask (MIC) with 30', Spider Mask (Underdark) with 60', and (if you've got lots of money) the Robe of Eyes (DMG) gives 120' darkvision.

For Alertness the standard item is the Dark Blue Ioun stone, which grants the feat (DMG).

DeletedHeh. I'm surprised you deleted the nose-ring idea. I normally think all ideas for new magic items are lame (as if we don't have enough magic items), but your idea was probably the only one I've seen that actually had merit (since a regular ring could theoretically be used as a nose ring).

I've made another thread out of this idea
