In your opinion, what are the best four magic items for the starting-out iconic party? The rules are: four items, each costing no more than 1000gp, to equip a first level fighter, cleric, wizard and rogue.

Obvious choices would be the Pearl of Power for a wizard and the Phylactery of Faithfulness for the cleric... but how about the rogue? Elvish Insoles - +3 to Move Silently (100 x 3 squared bonus) perhaps?

So - wherever they come from - DMG, SRD, any other books or your own inventions following the creation rules - what are the best four items you could give to a first level party?

Cheers,
Wulfric

Everburning piece of chalk (101gp)- It's a light! No, its a signal! No, its a....
Wand of Cure Light Wounds(ridiculously cheap)- The cleric can have fun now, too!
Scroll of Cure Light Wounds, arcane(50gp)- Just in case the group boy scout goes down and you need someone to heal.
Quall' Feather Token, Tree (400gp)- it's like a ladder, but easier to carry.

I had a druid character create a small pouch that produced 10 goodberrys a day. (4 party members)...food was a thing of the past, +2 free HP each day, instant stabilization, or just eat the whole handful for a nice +10 hp.

Not a magic item.
I prefer tanglefoot bags for the rogue. Capable of immobiling targets making them easy prey for sneak attacks. Or if you need to run away buys you a round or two. Throw it where you here invisible creatures. Throw it on a door make it stuck closed.

Tanglefoot bags are good.

Please note, that Sorcerors and Wizards can not use Wands of Cure Light Wounds (Aracane), they are for Bards only. (To use a wand the spell must be on your list.) However, a Bard should certainly pick one up.
