In the picture, in the PHB of the spiked chain, it shows it being connected by three rings. You could pretty much split the thing in two from the middle ring.
Well I had an idea, that you could take the two halves and make them out of different metals to overcome DR and stuff like, make one adamantine ofcourse and the other like cold iron or silver. You could also enchant each one seperatly to make them do different things in different situations. Like make one side sweeping, disarming, etc.. for tricky things and make the other side your favorite damaging abilities for if you need to do damage. Now I would say that even though they are seperate when you put them together the total weapon can't be more than +10 bonus ofcourse otherwise it would be too good. But this weapon is perfect for the ultimate tactical fighters like the chain fighter usually is. It was just a thought that popped into my head and I wan't to offer it to the dm in a campain I'm in and I just wanted some feed back. :D

That picture is misleading, the spiked chain is a two-handed weapon not a two-sided weapon (the picture has led many to believe otherwise). So therefore it isnt going to work unless you homebrew a new weapon which is totaly plausible. Post it if you work one out.

Well when you cut the ring in the middle it becomes two liitle chains, two serperate chains. This would allow you to make them seperatly then just connect them with another ring. Even though it isn't "double sided," it can still be two seperate weapons just turn the chain around.

2x +5 weapons = 100,000 gp
1x +10 weapon = 200,000 gp

Overpowered.

No, I don't think you understand. The spiked chain really is nothing like what you see in the PHB. Only one end can attack. If you split it in half, you lose the point of the weapon, which is having both reach and close threatening squares. The CW has a much better picture of one in the tactical feats seciton, seen here (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/cw_ag/75468.jpg) . That is a much better depiction. There is not discernable middle. If you split it, you have useless pointy chains. You can't "turn it around". It doesn't work like that. If a weapon is not listed as a double weapon, you can't do what you're proposing. Nice idea, but it just doesn't work.

Here Jarvis, this is a much better picture of the spiked chain...

Hey! Here's an idea!

How about we make the individual links in the chain out of alternating materials so that it can beat the DR of EVERYTHING?

The first link can be admantine, the second, silver, the third, cold iron, the fourth adamantine again, the fifth silver again, etc.

It would completely mechanically unsound. What would be the hardness/hit points of the thing? Its got adamantine, but also silver. How much damage would it do? Would it get the -1 penalty to damage from silver? It just messes things up to do what you are asking.

Maybe it would work on a unique/epic/artifact weapon... :P

How about this?
Exotic Weapon: Double Chain.
Double weapon.
Damage: Small 1d6, Medium 2d4.
Critical: x2.
15 lb.
Piercing.

How the bloody hell would that work as a weapon. Tell me. I am just DIEING to know.

They would work like sword-chucks, obviously.

It would work much like all other implausible D&D weapon.
In a realistic outlook you could just weild it like you do a regular chain. Choose which side you want to use, the hold the chain by the other side.
Swing chain around like a wildman and have fun!!

You could have a character that goes around saying: 'I like swords!'
And and and he would know the Two-fisted monkey style!

Wouldn't that be awesome

Better idea:
Each link is really an Intelligent item, each of them having been members of a secret cult, and every link can use True Ressurection and Disintegration 1/day, and Mass Cure Critical Wounds 3/day. Better! :P

This idea is highly implausible, in that the Spiked Chain isn't made to be separate weapons. In fact, it's designed completely to a full functional set of loops that create a single weapon. The opposite of what you're looking for.

Alright guys, lets try and remember that this is a game.
Not only is a game, but its a fantasy game.
I dont think wielding a "Highly Implausible" chain weapon is any harder than say....Power Word Kill?

How would you swing it without killing yourself?

You'd have to keep it spinning for the entire time you're using it, meaning that you aren't dodgng blows as much.

To think you could control two lengths of spiked chain, dodge bloews and attack with any force behind t is insane.

Beyond that, I'd make it an Exotic Weapon that does 1d6/1d6 piercing, +2 on trip and disarm, may be used as a reach weapon that deals 1d6 piercing (though it must be determined at the start of each round how the weapon will be used). It is D&D after all.

In my games I allow the spiked chain to be used as a double weapon, though if used as such it only has a 5' reach. I got the idea from a prestige class called "Chain Master" or "Lord of Chains" or something like that. Can't remember what book that was in, might have been 3.0, but one of the special abilities at a certain level was to be able to utilize a spiked chain as a double weapon with a 5' reach.

I'm not sure if this is fair compromise, or if it will simply open the door to more bashing, but who cares? :)

Again, FANTASY!!!
How can you sling spells?
How can you ride a horse that has wings?
How can you fight a dragon?

BTW, you could just choose to swing one side at a time, granted that limits its use as a double weapon, but if you want realism.
Look at the pic of the orcs fighting the hag. The orc wielding the chain is holding quite a length in her off hand, whos to say that cant be the adamantine side, or silver side?

Bondius, do you allow the player who is capable of using it as a double weapon to enchant each side differently?

Bondius, do you allow the player who is capable of using it as a double weapon to enchant each side differently?

I know the question wasn't aksed (GAH! Didn't mean to do that, but you should be able to figure out what I meant...) of me, but it slammed a bit of the DMG/PHB rules on enchanted double weapons to the surface of the roiling morass of stuff that is my mind...Double weapons require each end to be enchanted separately. Thus, the wielder would, of course, be able to enchant each side differently. They just couldn't use the enchantments from both sides on the same attack.

I believe someone, somewhere on these boards said it best by suggesting the following procedure for wielding the fuskin' evil-lookin' thing in the PHB: 1) Get drunk. 2) Swing it around wildly. 3) Go to the hospital.

To that, I add, in my mind, the following three steps: 4) Ask yourself "Why, God? Why!?" 5) Ask yourself if you feel lucky(punk. Well, do ya? Huh?) upon recovery. If so, proceed to 6. If not, then go home and get some sleep. 6) Repeat the whole procedure again, with body armor on everything that matters.

Oh, wait...Gah, should've looked at the post (by Bondious) being referred to above, and then said my piece. As it is, I'd still say they could get each side enchanted differently, as long as it obeyed the normal rules for a Double Weapon...maybe the wielding it as a Double Weapon with a 5' Reach could be a Weapon Style feat, if the DM even lets you use it.

Hence my comment of "It is D&D after all."

Thank you kindly for actually reading the entire post.

1: How do you swing a spiked chain as a double weapon without being a greater threat for yourself then the opponent:
I thought exactly this, when I saw the dire flail. :D

About the thread: I think it is funny, how one post a good question and then a lot of people come and talk *censored*.

jarvis02: There is a diffrence between the magic part and the special material part.
Enchanting both end diffrently should really be no problem. You pay twice so basicly all you have are two weapons that you can switch as a free action. That bonus is really minor enough to be no problem. Also you have the drawback that when your chain get's sundered or you loose it (Can happen when you use that special moves with it), you loose "both weapons" at once. However, in this case, making both ends of diffrent materials is no problem, too.

But then if you only make it of two materials and enchant it as one, you save some money. Here, technically, there is nothing that speaks against it (well, you could imagine strange restrictions when magic comes into play but this is not that good, too.
The better solution is to simply alow it but make it expencive, without an good ingame reason, just say: Because of balancing, this costs an extra 2,500 gp or requires a craft weaponsmithing DC 25, and a month of work.

I had this discussion before with a greateaxe (and one blade out of cold iron and silver each).

And I think the picture linked above works good, too. with this links, it is a bit more work of weaponsmithing to open it in the middle (about there where he is holding it with his right hand), but the other end, that is hanging useless in the low right corner of the picture looks like it could smack, too. And if it was made of silver it could smack werebeasts hart.

Please, Please, colyn..."bondious"! :ahem:

All that aside, and as to your question...it hasn't yet come up. I've newly instituted this rule for one of my players who is playing a spiked chain wielding Swashbuckler, and they're only at like level 5 or something. I'm really not sure how I'll rule that, when/if it comes up (she doesn't use it as a double weapon very often...like once).
