Ok I thought I would start a thread that I havn't seen but I bet was posted Prior. I'm looking for the best STANDARD weapon in the game ( I.E, short sword, kukri, longbow.) just one that isn't enchanted with any magic. you can make it out of any crafting material and any book that is used.

Harpoon:
"The harpoon is a broad-bladed spear forges with barbs. The shaft has a trailing rope attached to controll the harpooned opponents. though designed for hunting whales and other large sea creatures, the harpoon can be used on dry land.
If it deals damage, the harpoon lodges in an opponent who fails a reflex saving throw (DC 10 + damage dealt). A harpooned creature moves only half speed and cannont run or charge. If you control the trailing rope by succeeding on an opposed strength check while holding it. the harpooned creature can move only within the limits that the rope allows. if the harpooned creature attempts to cast a spell, it must succeed on a DC 15 Concentration check or lose the spell.
The Harpooned creature can pull the harpoon from its wounds if it has two free hands and takes a full-round action to do so, but it deals damage to itself equal to the initial harpoon damage dealt. the character who succeeds on a DC 15 heal check can remove a harpoon without further damage." - frostburn

can be used as ranged and melee, able to control oppenent, great for fleeing enemies.

Really depends on the character build

For a fighter with lots of feats to spend, the Spiked Chain is usually acknowledged as the best weapon.

If you are not a fighter, the spiked chain is not so good.

------------

The Harpoon is an abusive item, if you allow it without any house ruling. Technically you can make it flaming/silent/frost/wounding, etc. hit the guy once then leave it in them doing the magical effect each round.

I guess it depends on personal choice. Just back up why you choose the weapon. I'm not looking for an overall best, just great uses of non-magical weapons.

Since the harpoon doesn't do damage each round even when impaled, the effects of magic wouldn't be done each round. and this is all about not having magic on items.

The flaming, etc. do not say "when the weapon does damage". They say the weapon is sheathed in fire, and specifically mentions doing damage merely from touching it, unless you are wielding the weapon. You could claim that it does less than 1d6 if a 'hit' was not done, but claiming that it does no damage would be House Ruling.

I would consider it a reasonable house rule, if rather illogical, but it is a house rule to claim that touching a flaming thing does no damage.

Even then the Silence would continue to exist no matter what, making it a nasty thing to throw at a caster.

I also agree that without magic, the Harpoon is not abusive.

In fact I consider it weak without magic. The extra affects it has simply are not worth the major disadvantages it has, hence it was not used in real combat against people.

I apolagize, after relooking at the rules I see your completely right about the magical effects of flaming etc.
Even without magic I still think that harpoon is a great weapon, even though not used against people in casual use it can be done, and that is what makes it so fun to use. you can control to an extent the movement of your opponent. and deal a great amount of damage. as well as hindering spellcasters.

There really is no best weapon. It depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Spiked chain is great for versatility -- any build involved reach, tripping, or disarming pretty much must get a spiked chain.

If you're a two-handed power-attacking fighter, then you want the greatsword, greataxe, or any other high-damage two-hander. But those will obvioulsy be worthless to you if you are a two-weapon fighter, in which case you want a pair of light weapons.

Again, it really depends on what your build is.
