| metamind12-06-05, 07:26 PM | what are the best weapon materials? ill start off 1. Thinaun (steals soul after death, so enemy can not be revived) 2. Deep crystal (very tough) 3. Adymantine (also very tough) |
| ReverendCow12-06-05, 09:31 PM | 3. Adymantine (also very tough) *ahem* Adamantine. 4. Deep Crystal. Psions can put power points in it for additional damage. |
| Rulebook12-06-05, 09:42 PM | Steel. its tough, light, and common enough so you dont need some cockamamey quest, DM Fiat, or outright BS to get your hands on it. |
| Blaque12-06-05, 09:53 PM | Crysteel (Eberron) - +1 damage for psions, and allows you to get Crysteel Galvination enhancement, which i sall kindsa good with Impact:) Ummm, stuff. |
| Gruffmug12-06-05, 09:56 PM | star metal from CA is nice too. all the benifits of adamantite and +1d6 vs outsiders Gruffmug |
| Subedei12-07-05, 12:40 AM | Yeah, Adamantine/Starmetal is hands down the best IMO. The ability to simply cut/bludgeon your way through any opsticle short of more adamantine is just too good to pass up. Stuck in a maze? Cut through the walls. Locked door? Cut it in half. Enemy attacks you with a non-adamantine weapon? Sunder it. Someone trying to sunder your weapon? Too bad. Fighting a shield user? Sunder it too! An adamantine shovel is about the most useful mundane item in existance IMO. And it only costs 3,000gp! |
| gorfnad the shiznit12-07-05, 12:54 AM | Or you could just get the metalline weapon enchantment, then you would have every type of metal/material for the weapon to be made of. |
| BigDumb12-07-05, 01:26 AM | metalline weapon enchantment Where is this at? |
| ArconnTheAncient12-07-05, 01:28 AM | The question I ask, why not combine metals? Seem silly, think about a long sword with a hallow blood groove? If that groove were instead filled with Thinaun you could take souls while getting the benefits of a high grade edge (Ad?). I tend to gravitate towards evil characters so Gehennan Morghuth-Iron is a favorite. The cutting edge sucks, -1 on attack and damage, put it recessed in a blood grove though and take advantage of its naturally toxic nature. DC12 Pri 1 Dex, Sec 1d4 Dex. Nothing fab but poison is the gift that keeps on giving and really, isn't that just fun? |
| gorfnad the shiznit12-07-05, 01:32 AM | metalline is a +3 weapon enchantment that allows you to change the type of material the weapon is made of as a standard action. it's in the book of exalted deeds if i remember correctly, however i do not have my books in front of me at the moment so i'll get back to you on that unless someone else can find it before i come back. |
| Zathyr12-07-05, 03:48 AM | FR Underdark, I think. Check out: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=289375 |
| Rulebook12-07-05, 07:53 AM | The question I ask, why not combine metals? Because you can only benifit from one metal type per object. usually the dominant metal. if you want to make a special item/weapon that can do that, you go ahead, but you cant have a Mithral core Adamantine weapon to break hardness but weigh half as much (yes i know there are materials that do that. im making a point) |

DC12 Pri 1 Dex, Sec 1d4 Dex. Nothing fab but poison is the gift that keeps on giving and really, isn't that just fun? Another reason is practicality. If a long sword has a groove in it filled that the material, you instantly assume you are gotting to run your opponent though. In rule terms a longsword deals slashing damage therefore you do not run someone though with it so your groove does not/might not come into contact. Also the only weapons it would therefore apply to are those that can have grooves and therefore generally slashing so its too complicated in rule terms (you'd need some 20-25% chance of the groove making contact etc.) Also because D&D is a game you have to have disadvantages as well as advantages so you can't combine materials to get both advantages with no penalty(other than the obvious cost-another reason since the cost formulas for making weapons world be amazingly complicated with this function (i barely get them now)). And thats why you can't combine materials... |
| 2y1y1z212-07-05, 01:05 PM | If you're only talking about weapons, I really like Cold Iron. But if you want to talk about armors...Mithril. Hands Down. Look at Mithril Full Plate. Medium Armor Cost: 10,500 GP Armor Bonus: +8 Max Dex Bonus: +3 Armor Check Penalty: -3 Arcane Spell Failure: 25% Weight: 25 lb. |
| Dev Vim12-07-05, 01:13 PM | addy is still the best for weapons, though my friends elf swashbuckler LOVES his pandemonic silver lightblade and thinblade, especially since one lets him walk in any force of wind and one can kick up a tornado strength wind around him for one round per day. Mithril half plate with the soulfire and fortification enhancment is every barbarians best friend, trust me |
| savant_warlord1312-07-05, 03:42 PM | mithral is very nice for armor. I can wear my mithral full plate without any nonproficiency penalty even though my armor proficiency only goes up to medium! It also reduces armor check penalty by 3 and arcane spell failure chance by 10% it sucks for weapons though |

| Dev Vim12-07-05, 03:54 PM | he had them custom made, one a variant of a weapon from the arms and armor for 3.0 it really works well, especially when dealing with a hoard of kobold |
| Dev Vim12-07-05, 03:55 PM | one thing i do want to try and make though, a golem mad of aurorum granted thats more of a creature, but still |
| kalstrand12-07-05, 04:59 PM | Even better than an Aurorum golem is an Aurorum golem with the equivalent of Mettaline on it. Use the Mettaline power to make it an Adamantine golem and when someone finally kills it the golem reverts back to aurorum which restores itself in 1 round. It then gets up and changes back into Adamantine. |
| Oliver D'Argent12-07-05, 05:51 PM | Personally, I like Adamantine for weapons and Mithral for armor. The question I ask, why not combine metals? Seem silly, think about a long sword with a hallow blood groove? If that groove were instead filled with Thinaun you could take souls while getting the benefits of a high grade edge (Ad?). Apart from the fact (as Rulebook stated) that you can't combine the effects of different materials - when you refer to a "blood groove" are you referring to the groove cut along the center line of many sword blades? If so, filling that groove would defeat its purpose - which is not, as some suppose, a channel for blood. The proper term for this groove is "fuller" and its purpose is to lighten the blade without weakening it. |
| Allusionist12-08-05, 12:50 AM | Alchemical silver and cold iron. Then again, my DM LOVES demons and devils and evil outsiders..... |
| Dev Vim12-08-05, 08:46 AM | Even better than an Aurorum golem is an Aurorum golem with the equivalent of Mettaline on it. | Gruffmug12-08-05, 05:16 PM | Well, for its not mithral. The best is glass steel. Right out of races of fearun. It grants the properties of mithral and Adamantine. Glasssteel Full plate that is halfweight only weights 12.5 pounds and grants DR3/-. Now that is great. Gruffmug |
| Chimaera200012-08-05, 09:00 PM | :uh-huh: Wow, that just has "broken" written all over it. As for materials, I'd say that mithral or adamantine is best for armor (depending on if you have a good Dexterity or not) and adamantine would be best for weapons. With that being said, though, I love my paladin/cleric's silver bastard sword that he built and enchanted himself. |
| Stealth_Ninja12-08-05, 09:15 PM | Use the Mettaline power to make it an Adamantine golem and when someone finally kills it the golem reverts back to aurorum which restores itself in 1 round. Glasssteel Full plate that is halfweight only weights 12.5 pounds and grants DR3/-. Now that is great. Gruffmug Well with the newest *official* printing of Glasssteel, the best way to describe it is as "uberMithral" instead of a "mith/addy" hybrid. It doesnt provide DR or ignore hardness. Instead is just extra extra light, and has an awesome hardness/hp. Now as to the OP's question/topic: For me it depends on which weapon we are talking about. For my main weapon, it would have to be Addamantine. For my backup weapon would most definately be a +1 Metalline holy morningstar, as that seems to bypass virtually any DR i can think of of any creature i would want to fight, that the primary weapon couldnt. Barring Metalline being available, i would go with either a silver or cold iron weapon. Which ever i pick, i would probably also take a dagger/shortsword made from the other one as a back up back up weapon, just to be safe. |
| kalstrand12-08-05, 11:11 PM | Aurorum is a special material in the Book of Exalted Deeds. Metalline is a weapon enchantment in Underdark I believe. |
| Silverthumb12812-08-05, 11:14 PM | Godsteel: Plus GooglePlex(cubed)d100 damage to any living creature. -5 damage against Constructs and Undead. :D Teh winnar. |
| Lord Schpungus12-08-05, 11:25 PM | Where's the new glassteel published? The only one I know of is in races of faerun, and it's the Mithramantine, only clear, version. |
| Wharin12-09-05, 12:30 PM | Champions of Valour. A new Forgotten Realms book |
| Stealth_Ninja12-09-05, 02:32 PM | Can someone type me out the specifics on metalline please, I don't have any underdark books |
| Rulebook12-09-05, 02:59 PM | please, you know how picky the people on this board are about typing copyright material... you know better than to ask! |
| Dęгơs12-10-05, 02:30 AM | everybody may jump on me for this, but my DM and group have used a house rule for years, without any real problems in terms of balance. if you want the abilities of two seperate materials, you can have it. to make it simple, we assume you get the best of each materials' features. to figure the cost, we use a very simple formula: add the cost of the finished weapon (or armour) of each type together and multiply by the number of materials: a mithral breastplate costs 4,350gp and an adamantine breastplate costs 10,350gp, so one made of the alloy would cost 29,400gp. another example: an adamantine greatsword costs 3,350gp, a silver greatsword costs 530gp, and a solarian truesteel greatsword costs 1,350gp. a sword made of an alloy of these three metals would cost 15,690gp. it would have the sundering prowess and hardness/hp of the adamantine, be able to pass dr for both adamantine and silver, and get the +1 to critical confirmation rolls from the solanian truesteel. it may look powerful, but remember that its not magical, so no beating DR/magic without more money. also, its effectively two relatively inexpensive weapons rolled into one, and costing much more for the convience. |
