Better Bow than Longbow? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-15-05, 08:54 PM I'm looking to max out my ranged-based fighter. It there a more powerful bow than longbow? I could have sworn I was a "great bow" that did 1d10 in a book, but I can't find it.

Was I dreaming?

04-15-05, 09:04 PM The greatbow is in Complete Warrior, it does 1d10, and IIRC has a 120 ft range increment.

Anyway, I must be one blind fool, I skimmed Complete Warrior and totally missed the Great Bow....

As some people are still stuck in the "Gnomes are scientists" prejudice, you could call ita Gnomish bow.

Compound bows are superior because the draw weight reached it's maximum half-way through the draw, with a much reduced pull required to hold the string at full draw. Light arrows could be used and achieve 50% faster moving arrows.

I would represent this as follows: Damage is 1d4+4 instead of 1d8.

Then you'd just need the rapid-shot and many-shot feats! Let's see... That's like... assuming the DM thinks the same, about 4 arrows per attack! Manyshot puts 2 arrows on the string, so with 2 strings, 4 arrows! At least 3 if your DM is picky. Then add rapid shot on top of that... Good god :eek: .... can we say power-gaming gone horribly wrong? :D

The greatbow (composite or regular) can never be used while mounted. And the extra Str bonis costs 200gp a point. It's a pretty good deal if you have a high Str and are an archer.

Though actually, its not as great as it sounds. :(

Its just a standard composite longbow with +20 feet to its range increment.
And its a bit harder to get hold of the raw materials :rolleyes:

now what about blood seeking + exit wound?

Does the blood seeking ability negate the +4 armor class bonus granted from cover from allies??

If so, with a great bow, you now have the equivalent of a ranged super great cleave :D
