A 5th lvl Paladin w/ 18 str.

#1) weapon focus & improved crit. longsword-wielding Sword & Board

#2) THF Greatsword w/out the above

Does the imp. crit. of #1 help S&B stack up w/ THF?

Improved Critical requires a BAB of +8 and therefore your Pal5 can't qualify. :(

In terms of damage dealing capability, the S&B paladin will do slightly less (assuming a long sword +1 keen instead of the Imp. Crit feat) than the THF paladin (assuming a greatsword +1). Versus AC 20 the S&B paladin has a damage expectation of 6.27 damage/attack. The THF paladin has 7.7 damage/attack.

However, the S&B will have an AC that is better than the THF - by at least 1 point, probably 2. This is not a small difference - in terms of making the paladin more survivable.

So calulating BAB to determine a prereq eligibility only involves the initial figure, not including any STR/ other ability bonus?

FWIW, we're running 3.0

Also, w/ this 5th lvl Pal I'm going to be the party tank. The option of keeping versatile doing either S&B or THF if I choose sounds good. If I can choose 3 feats, what will serve me best as I'll constantly be on point in combat? Particularly, what would you choose out of these 5 feats, or do you have any other suggestions?:

Power Attack
Imp. Initiative (I have a +2 dex bonus to initiative already)
Cleave
Great Cleave
Combat Reflexes

Thx!

Yes - your BAB is determined by the sum of your class levels - so a 5th level paladin w/ 18Str has a BAB of +5; a 6th lvl wizard/5th lvl fighter with a 10 Str has a BAB of +8. The fact that the paladin will have an attack bonus of +9 (or +10 with WF) does not help him in getting Improved Critical.

As to what style to use, that's really a decision for you. You might want to use something like a buckler and a bastard sword (so you can dictate S&B or THF depending on the situation) if you want to remain versatile.

As to what feats to choose - there's so many combinations to use. Personally, I prefer to not get hit. So I tend to pick up Dodge (Dex 13), Expertise (Int 13) and similar feats if they are options for me. As a paladin, I generally wouldn't bother with WF because you don't have a lot of feats to work with - and that way you can choose to be versatile in keeping your weapon choice open.

Also, don't overlook Quickdraw. Its usefulness is fairly underrated, in my opinion.

Good luck with what you choose.
