Bit and Bridle? [Archive] - Wizards Community

is it just something you need with every mount to control it?

In DnD, I'm sure you could control a horse without one, what with magic and such.

You can in real life as well, it's just not as easy. It would probably be either the equivalent of a trick for the horse, or a handle animal check for the rider (or a ride check) more frequently.

Do you need every single thing explained? I don't think the PH really explains exactly what a lot of things are - it's common sense stuff.

And no, there's no rule about having a bit and bridle, but there's no rule about your character having to wear boots/shoes either. And if one of my players was walking and fighting all day without shoes on, they'd be feeling it, rules for it or no.

Basically, you buy the horse.
If it's a pack animal, you buy the pack saddle, no bit& bridle.
if it is to be ridden, you buy the bit&bridle and the riding saddle.

They used to detail that stuff in 2nd edition, I think it's like 5 sp for shoeing.
Also, without a bit and bridle you have to "Guide mount with knees" which is a DC 5 Ride Check.

As a former horse owner I can tell you that horseshoes are not really a necessity. They SHOULD be used, to protect the horse, but they are also going to be a negligible price I think.

Bridles...usually a necessity unless you have a hackamore (which would also be listed under bit/bridle because most people don't know what it is) or your mount is REALLY well trained. :D
