Black Sand:Maximizing usefullness. [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-30-08, 07:52 PM I have a character with the tomb tainted soul feat, and I am considering taking Black Sand for one of my limited number of spell choices.
For those who dont know, Black Sand creates an area of complete darkness emanating from a layer of black sand. Contact with the sand inflicts 1d4 negative energy damage.Not that impressive, except that any creature reduced to 0 hit points becomes Black Sand them selves.

A scroll and a small animal would be ideal for this spell, saving me from choosing it as one of my 3rd level Spells Known(Im playing the spontaneous divine caster variant from Unearthed Arcana).Unfortunately, magic items of all sort are in short supply in this game.

So my question is: how do I maximize the use of black sand?Could I weaponize it some how? A pocketful of healing is great, but may not be worth a spell choice.

04-30-08, 08:26 PM Well, a Portable Hole of Black Sand is more than merely a vat o' heal for you, but also a potent trap for creatures who can't fly and fall in. I don't really know how to weaponize it beyond traps....

If you could figure out the logistics of releasing/collecting it, spreading it over an area in the battlefield gives you a safe zone. This presumes you have tons of sand and a means to gather most of it up. It's also not user friendly to the more positive-aligned sorts in your party.

Definitely consider it's trap applications.

05-01-08, 06:59 PM Portable hole and, depending on your DM's interpretation, gray bag of tricks. Leave it open while you sleep at night, with a little food hanging over it. Mabey youll catch some squierls or something... Or find a town with alot of commoners.

05-01-08, 08:13 PM It is mostly good for trapping your base, or fortifying your stronghold. You have hallways with floors that heal you, and hurt everyone else. [means you need a stronghold and a base]

Maybe I can find a scroll of it yet!
