i am a sword and shield fighter.

is there any type of shield with, say blade around the edges, so that it does slashing damage rather than piercing with spikes, or bludgeoning alone?

Yes, it is called the Dwarven Buckler Axe, it is in the Complete warrior.

cost 20gp, damage 1d4 for small creatures, 1d6 for meduim creatures, crit x3, no range, slashing damage, +1 shield bonus, -1 check penalty, 5% spell failure chance, no ac bonus if you attack with it in the round

it's exotic so you would need the proficiency as well

Or you could just take the stats for shield spikes, change the damage type from piercing to slashing, and not bother having to waste a feat. As far as I can tell the only reason to pay the feat for the buckler axe is that you get a x3 critical instead of a x2.

I'd have to carefully read the PHB description of dwarves, but would this shield-axe fall under their dwarven weapon familiarity? I know the PHB explicitly includes the dwarven waraxe and urgosh, but I wonder if it is meant to include all dwarven exotic weapons. If so, a dwarf could use this as a martial weapon.

Does anyone know of anything official on this?

Yes. But the the ruling on that is, you pick one racial weapon to be martial. So for drarves, you pick eather the axe thing, OR the shield. the other stays exotic.

Ahhh. I didn't know you had to pick one. Thanks.
