| TimelordSimone05-05-07, 01:05 PM | I got my answers already. I thank those that helped me. Now... people seem to be discussing bladed whips or something. So I changed the title, so more people would know what the thread was actually about. |
| Nephlite05-05-07, 01:15 PM | Title says it all really... Can you apply sneak attack damage to an attack with a whip? As long as not wearing too much armor or natural armor (whips can't damage those people). Also meet requirements denied dex to AC (can't flank). If so... would it be lethal or non-lethal damage? Sneak attack ceals same type of damage as the weapon. Also... If you had a shock whip, would the shock damage apply when you tripped someone? No, same as if you had shocking scythe to trip (which it can). Also... If you had a brilliant energy whip, would it damage people wearing armour? Thank you in advance. Unsure. |
| Majick05-05-07, 01:29 PM | get a bladed/dagger whip from the arms and equipment guide does lethal slashing and can effect peoples in armor like usual weapons can |
| Captain_Kobold05-06-07, 12:22 AM | A Brilliant energy whip would damage creatures wearing armour, but not those with a natural armour high enough to ignore the whip. (+3 or better.) |
| Palazzo05-06-07, 01:16 AM | Brilliant Energy can't be put on whips, they are not metal. |
| Captain_Kobold05-06-07, 01:58 AM | Brilliant Energy can't be put on whips, they are not metal. Why is being metal a requirement? As far as I can see there is no restriction on what weapons can be Brilliant energy as long as they are Melee, Throwing or Ammunition. |
| Gnarl05-06-07, 04:25 AM | Also... If you had a brilliant energy whip, would it damage people wearing armour? Thank you in advance. I wonder why this ability is so much trouble :D. The mechanical description of the ability says it ignores armor and shield bonuses to AC. |
| Devlonir05-06-07, 02:14 PM | get a bladed/dagger whip from the arms and equipment guide does lethal slashing and can effect peoples in armor like usual weapons can Arms & Equipment guide are 3e and is nowadays officially overruled by the magic item compendium... |
| StruckingFuggle05-06-07, 03:19 PM | Arms & Equipment guide are 3e and is nowadays officially overruled by the magic item compendium... Officially? Where's that printed? Also, maybe for the Wonderous Items and Enchantments and etc in the MIC, but funny enough, the MIC doesn't have mundane equipment, mundane weapons, or vehicles. Even if the MIC is an official update, the mundane stuff hasn't been reprinted or said "nope, not valid" in the 3.5 update to 3.0, so the whip-dagger would still be valid...ish. They did change how whips worked, but since there's a 3.0 whip and 3.5 whip, its pretty easy to figure out how a 3.5 whip-dagger would work. |
| Cuddly_Wuddlykins05-06-07, 03:30 PM | Dont all sneak attacks even with a nonlethal weapon deal lethal damage because you hit vulnerable areas? |
| RavenDrake05-06-07, 04:23 PM | Dont all sneak attacks even with a nonlethal weapon deal lethal damage because you hit vulnerable areas? Nope. Sneak attacks deal damage based on the weapon. A sneak attack with a short sword deals lethal piercing damage because that's what a shortsword deals. A sneak attack with a sap deals non-lethal bludgeoning damage. A sneak attack with a whip deals non-lethal slashing damage. The Whip Dagger has actually been reprinted in 3.5 (Dungeon magazine, I believe, though the issue number eludes me). It retains most of it's 3.0 statistics(damage and crit, price, etc) but uses the new mechanics from 3.5 in it's function. |
| Nathreet05-06-07, 06:57 PM | off-topic, but I think the whip-dagger is like sword-chucks. It's an attempt to get the best of both weapons that in reality wouldn't hurt anything except yourself. I mean, were whip daggers actually used in the past? (I'm asking, I don't know) |
| RavenDrake05-06-07, 07:34 PM | off-topic, but I think the whip-dagger is like sword-chucks. It's an attempt to get the best of both weapons that in reality wouldn't hurt anything except yourself. I mean, were whip daggers actually used in the past? (I'm asking, I don't know) Well, bladed whip weapons were used occasioally. The nagaika(or nagyka) was a thick, heavy whip which often featured a thin blade at the end, though it was not actually a combat weapon. The idea of a "whip dagger" (that is a whip which has a thin blade at the end rather than the normal fringe) is not really farfetched, and wouldn't be any more difficult to weild than would a normal whip really(not for combat anyway). |
| Nathreet05-06-07, 07:48 PM | Ok, I can see a thin blade at the end working, if it was aligned with the whip: long shaft extending into the whip to keep it straight, or tied down at 2 points. I was thinking an actual dagger that could spin any which way and thus make it hard to hit your opponent, and easy to hit yourself. I think the original poster could piece together an answer from comments made so far, but just to keep it simple: lethal no, shock damage only applies to hits that do damage. Though the rules do seem to imply that even touching the whip would shock anyone except the wielder. You may want to ask (e-mail WotC? Sift through the FAQs?), but in spite of the slight ambiguity in the rules I think the answer will still be no. yes, a brilliant energy whip would damage those wearing armor, unless their natural armor bonus was 3 or higher |
| Qwicksilver05-07-07, 04:13 AM | Ah, I always figured the new "whip dagger" could utilize barbs like at the end of a scourge, thus making it deal lethal damage and still be plausible. Also, to add to the whip question pile. Does adding magical enhancement bonuses to a whip (or other nonlethal weapon) bestow lethal damage capabilities to the weapon? If so, could a whip then feasibly damage creatures with over +1 armor bonus or +3 natural armor bonus, and thus qualify it for a sneak attack? |
| CantripN05-07-07, 06:37 AM | Why not just make a Vorpal Whip and be done with it? Yes, it's a slashing weapon. Hurray. |
| Kn1ves05-07-07, 10:06 AM | I always preferred the Nagaika. It makes more sense than the the Whip Dagger and it looks a heck of a lot better. |
| CaoSlayer05-07-07, 10:10 AM | Use an elemental damage whip. This have the plus of having all your sneak attack damage being elemental as well. |
| RavenDrake05-07-07, 07:40 PM | Ah, I always figured the new "whip dagger" could utilize barbs like at the end of a scourge, thus making it deal lethal damage and still be plausible. If so, could a whip then feasibly damage creatures with over +1 armor bonus or +3 natural armor bonus, and thus qualify it for a sneak attack? Nope. Just like magically enahncing a Sap, enhanceing a whip increases it's attack rolls, and gives it a bonus to damage, but that added damage is exactly the same as weapon normally deals(non-lethal slashing damage in the case of the whip) and obeys all the normal rules of melee weapon damage Adding the elemental enhancements is good because they will still deal normal(lethal, elemental) damage on a successful hit even if the whip itself does not. Unfortunately, CaoSlayer, adding the elemental enhancements does NOT turn the whip into an energy sneak attack weapon. Sneak Attack damage is determined by the damage of the weapon itself. A sneak attack with a +2 Shock Whip deals it's damage as non-lethal slashing damage, and only if the target has no armour bonus or less than a +3 natural armour bonus. |
