07-04-06, 12:30 PM This seems like a basic question, but I can't seem to find a ruling anywhere.

Does bleeding damage require a spellcaster to make a concentration check to cast?

At first I assumed not, since no one is physically attacking the caster.

Then I read the description of Concentration.

You must make a Concentration check whenever you might potentially be distracted (by taking damage, by harsh weather, and so on) while engaged in some action that requires your full attention. Such actions include casting a spell, concentrating on an active spell, directing a spell, using a spell-like ability, or using a skill that would provoke an attack of opportunity.

It doesn't say "by being attacked"...it specifically says "by taking damage".

Looking further down the page, I notice this:

DC
10 + damage dealt Damaged during the action.

This makes me think that a Wizard hit with "Bleeding Strike", Arterial Strike, or any other "Bleeding" attack would be forced to make a concentration check of 10+(bleeding damage) each round the bleeding occurs.

If this is the case, then Bleeding Attacks just became much more dangerous.

What is the general consensus here?

07-04-06, 12:37 PM Hmm... I would say yes they do have to make a concentration check equal to 10+ bleeding damage, if you think about it; if your bleeding quite heavily then it would be hard to concentrate.

07-04-06, 12:39 PM If your wizard takes continous damage (like bleeding, from Melf's acid arrow, ...) he must indeed make a concentration check every time he casts a spell as long as the damage effect persists.

Else your wizard will have to make only a concentration check when he takes damage while he casts a spell (=on his turn). The typical (only) example here is soemone hitting the wizard with a readied attack.
