| tate01-22-07, 01:43 AM | I was just wondering if Boccobs Blessed Book is worth the 12500 gp it costs. Does it cost anything to write a spell in the book? It says "you dont have to pay the 25 gp materials cost per page" but the materials cost is 100 gp, not 25. So I was wondering if its a typo, if the cost is 25 gp per page. If it costs nothing to scribe the spells then it is equivalent to writing 125 pages of spells, only really worth it in the high levels (13+). If you are crafting it yourself then it is worth about 65 pages, again only worth it at about level 9 or so. If it still costs 25 gp per page than I dont think its worth it at all basically, aside from it saves you weight (but dont you have a bag of holding or something by now?). Any opinions about this thing? |
| SageBahamut01-22-07, 02:03 AM | It is, in fact, free to scribe into a Boccob's Book. That's the point. For any book caster, it is worth it in a normal campaign. (I'm saying normal because I've been spending a lot of time on the CharOp boards lately...) If you have levels in Geometer its value goes up exponentially. You can carry literally 1000 spells on you. One per page. It becomes even more handy if you have more than one "book" class (i.e. Wizard/Archivist going for Mystic Theurge) and you can convince your DM to let you scribe both kinds of spells in there. (No reason not to, really, especially since the DMG predates Heroes of Horror and thus wouldn't have accounted for a class that didn't exist at the time.) Put it like this: The book costs 12,500. If it costs you 25 gp/page like the Book says, then it would cost you 25,000gp to scribe 1000 pages, meaning the book just saved you 12,500gp. If it's 100gp like you're saying, it would cost you 100,000 to fill a normal book of the same size, so your savings are even bigger (87,500gp to be exact). AND it counts as a magical item for purposes of saves and such, instead of a nonmagical item, which comes into play occasionally, and is quite handy. Edit: I'm an idiot. Removed a bad info line. |

And once you've transferred all the spells in your old spellbook to your blessed book, you can sell your old spellbook for a tidy sum. Plus, you still get two new, free spells every time you level up. To help recoup your investment in a blessed book, buy an ordinary spellbook (15 gp), put your new free spells in it, transfer them (again, for free) to your blessed book, and sell the ordinary spellbook with your two new spells in it. |

| tate01-22-07, 08:24 PM | Good call about scribing the free spells in both books and selling off the other one. The investment will pay for iteself in just a few levels. I am taking the elf racial sub levels for wizard, so I get 3 free spells every other level -- even better. My current campaign will probably last until about level 10 or so. I'm wondering if I should craft one of these at level 7. I'm thinking yes as by then my original spellbook will be full or almost full. Thats an easy 5k gold so the book costs just over 1k gold and 500 exp. The experience loss is hefty, but I can deal with that I think. Well I know what Im crafting at level 7 . . . |
