I'm planning to buy either of these items for my high level assassin, but not sure which one.

Blindfold is vulnerable against Superior Invisibility while Gem is against Nondetection. Blindfold also doesn't work against ethereal/incorpreal creatures (I guess). Hide/move silently works against true seeing. Is there other vulnerabilities?

How long does it take to remove OR don the blindfold? How long does it take to use the gem and can you even use it effectively while fighting? What other things should I consider while using the items (e.g. useful situations)?

Not sure about other vulnerabilities.

It takes a standard action to remove or don the blindfold once you have it in your hands. Cann't have a weapon in hand when putting it on since it needs to be tied.

Since it doesn't say any differently a standard action to use the gem. You have to hold the gem up to your eye.

The 3.5 version of the Gem of Seeing is only 30 minutes a day. The 3.0 version had no time limit.

The Blindfold, (a 3.0 only item) has no time limit.

Are you playing in a 3.0 only game?

Actually, the blindfold of true darkness was included in the MiC, though it was definetly toned down from the 3.0 verson in the A&EG.

Thank you for correcting me.

So, if you are playing in 3.0, you know the limits.

Playing 3.5, well, better check the MIC.

How was it toned down?

Also my DM ruled last time someone had the blindfold that they could leave it tied as a headband and use a move action to pull it down over their eyes. He said that tying and untying it every time was silly. YMMV

Blindsight is effective against Supirior Invisibility. The Blindfold will find those people.

tarkin: 3.5 only (otherwise I'd probably have bought mask of trueseeing)

forsaken1111: changed the range from 60' to 30'. My friend suggested the exact same thing, using the blindfold as a headband when not using it. Good suggestion.

snakeman830: You're wrong. Superior Invisibility: While invisible, the subject exudes no scent and is undetectable by scent, blindsense, tremorsense, and blindsight.

snakeman830: You're wrong. Greater Invisibility: While invisible, the subject exudes no scent and is undetectable by scent, blindsense, tremorsense, and blindsight.

Actually, you made a little typo, there. I'll bold the part you mistyped:

Greater Invisibility: This spell functions like invisibility, except that it doesn’t end if the subject attacks.

Greater Invisibility says nothing of the sort. It states "This spell functions like invisibility, except that it doesn’t end if the subject attacks."

If you're talking about a different spell, please provide a book and page number.

No. No, you're wrong.

Posts like this aren't very helpful. At the very least, tell him WHY he is wrong.

If you look up a notch, you'll see that I decided that I bloody well decided that myself four minutes afore you, but thanks for the community mind.

The blindfold does not work against superior invisibility. The 8th level one. That explicitly says that it does foil blind sight.

What book is that spell in?

My bad. I never meant to say greater invisibility, but superior invisibility (like snakeman originally said). Oh and the spell is from Spell Compendium.
