In the core rule book for 3.5 it says that blunt weapons take a -5 to damage when hitting skeletons while piercing and slashing do normal damage (or so my DM insist). This didn't make any sense to me so I tried searching for a revision or correction to the rule concerning this. I found a lot of sites that say that blunt weapons do double damage to skellies or normal damage to skellies but can find no source for these rulings. Any one have a source about the damage (correct version) or is it really -5 damage to skellies by blunt weapons and why.

Your DM has it backwards. Skeletons have DR 5/Bludgeoning. Whatever is listed after the / is what is required to bypass or ignore the damage reduction. Slashing and peircing will do 5 less.

Indeed.
There is not any mosters that gives a panelty to you to hit them based on the weapon type you use.
There are however some that have DR only overcome with specific weapons (such as bludgeoning for skeletons and slashing for zombies). But never to hit.

Given that your normal undead is immune to both mind-affecting effects and poisons, I would have to say that normal blunts do nothing...

But seriously, as has been said before, your DM has it backwards. The way damage reduction is read as follows. The number before the slash indicates how much damage is reduced from each hit. The word(s) after the slash tell you what ignores the damage reduction.

This is a common mistake with DR from what I have seen. Just show your DM this thread and he should correct his ways.

besides, which would do more damage to a skeleton realistically, a basball bat (bludgeoning) or a steak knife (piercing/slashing)?
