06-20-07, 11:59 PM The various martial adept items (Crown of White Ravens and the others) say they grant a manuever from the associated style. Does this use of "manuever" includes stances or not? I.e can the crown grant access to a stance?

06-27-07, 05:04 PM I asked Customer Service about this and got this answer:

"The rules for the items are unclear about stances unfortunately. Because of this, it will be up to your DM to decide how he/she wants to handle them and if you can use them to gain stances."

Now you might say that this section specifically refers to "maneuvers" and you'd be correct. And sometimes when TOB does that this specifically means "not stances" (as when trading maneuvers at even levels). However sometimes it doesn't e.g look up stance in the glossary and it says it's a type of maneuver. And another CustServ ruling says you can use Martial Scripts to initiate a stance despite those rules saying only "maneuvers". So basically you can't rely on a simple RAW interpretation because this book was never playtested/proofread well enough to be used with that degree of definition precision. Alas.

(Oh and the other ruling I got (after clarification because they gave the opposite ruling to someone else within 2 hours of telling me this! - they said "Sorry but the magic items in question are indeed vague"!) is that Martial adept items basically work exactly like feats when it comes to readying and recovering maneuvers. Adepts treat them like an extra maneuver known; non-adepts treat them as a once/encounter maneuver readied.)
