if I was going to create something like this what bonus would a weapon enchantment that gives a normal weapon the reach quality (thus it would not affect reach weapons which already have this quality), but also still allows attacks on creatures adjacent to the wielder be? +2 or +3? or is there already something from some book I'm not familiar with that does this?

What you describe sounds like a solid +2 encahntment to me.

The spiked chain is a reach weapon that also allows you to attack adjacent squares. It requires a feat to use properly(Exotic Weapon Proficiency). So the question becomes, "What enchantment would be equivalent to granting a free feat?" I would say +1 should be adequate.

Edit: The Spiked Chain also does a little less damage than two-handed martial weapons, but +2 sounds like a little too much. Maybe add another minor ability to the item and make it +2.

1. There is no rule or even a suggestion that one feat = +1. While +1 is the usual, many feats cost more than a mere +1. This makes sense because some feats are far more powerfull than others.

2. Taking the feat "Spiked Chain Proficiency" does not allow you to do it with any weapon. Spiked Chain has some severe limitations, among others is the fact that it requires two hands.

Many people want a one handed weapon that has reach, let alone reach + adjacent.

The magical enchantment he offers works on a one handed enchantment.

Therefore it is FAR better than the mere proficiency "spiked chain".

-----------

+1 is not close to being enough.

+3 is too powerfull.

+2 is just right.

Even if you limit it to 2H weapons and accept the notion that a no-prereq feat is worth a +1 ability, it's still a +2 enhancement.

Based on the +1 ability/feat relation, it would be a +1 ability to turn a heavy flail into a spiked chain. You gain reach, but loose half a hp damage and a point of threat range. Gaining the damage and threat range back is worth another +1 ability (compare keen).

I'd probably want a +3 ability to make a 1H weapon reach, and wouldn't allow it for a light weapon at all.

You make a good point. Somehow I was only considering two-handed weapons. With one-handed weapons included, +2 might even be cheap.

DMG page 225 Mighty Cleaving +1 a suggestion at least.
