| Xalin_Phir10-31-07, 08:15 PM | Ok, the DM and I are at odds on this one. Apparently according to the rules casting fox's cunning does not grant extra skills, or bonus spells. However the item headband of intellect, only states that it does not provide extra skill points, but says nothing about bonus spells. The spell to create the item is fox's cunning, so i am unsure if that rule for the spell is carried over to the powers provided to the item? I guess what i am trying to say is... Is their some general rule about enhancement bonus's for bonus spells for caster not applying ever? or just when casting a spell and not on items. |
| PhaedrusXY10-31-07, 08:16 PM | Yes, you get bonus spells. You don't get them with the spell because it doesn't last long enough for you to sleep and then prepare spells. |

However, the headband does provide bonus spells. If you need proof, play neverwinter nights. As long as the item is equipped, you get the bonus spell slots. pull the item, lose spell slots. However, you have to KEEP the item equipped at all times to keep the bonus spells. IE, if you go 'sleep with' someone and they move to take off the headband, you have to go 'the headband doesn't come off!' or lose those bonus spell slots and any spells that were held in them. |
| StevenO10-31-07, 11:59 PM | The ability boost you get from a Headband of Intellect is long term enough for a character to get bonus slots for a high ability. In the current form Fox's Cunning just doesn't last long enough for a character to have the bonus long enough to prepare the extra slots. As noted if you remove the item (or it becomes disabled) you will lose any bonus spells gained from that high stat. NOTE that these spells come from any UNUSED spells of the correct level. I don't know why you'd want to but you can't use a +2 Headband to gain a bonus spell slot, use "that slot" to prepare (and then cast) a long duration spell, and then remove the items +2 and claim the "lost" spell slot is the one you had just finished casting. |

Thus gaining 'infinite bonus spells per day'. It would only work with..maybe a drunk DM. |
| goawayugh11-01-07, 08:31 AM | Here you go:Do ability enhancing items (such as the headband of intellect, cloak of charisma, and periapt of wisdom) grant bonus spells to the appropriate spellcasters? The spells these items are based on would seem to prohibit it, but the only things specifically addressed in the item descriptions are skill points. Yes, you can get extra bonus spells if you have an item that increases the ability score that governs your spellcasting. To get the extra bonus spells, you must wear the item while resting to regain spells and all through your initial daily preparations for spellcasting. (Even characters who don’t prepare spells need to meditate a little while at the beginning of the day; see Daily Readying of spells under the Sorcerers and bards section of Chapter 10 in the Player’s Handbook.) If you lose the item, you immediately lose the bonus spell slots the item gave you, starting with any uncast spells you have of the appropriate levels. |
| risner11-01-07, 10:43 AM | However the item headband of intellect, only states that it does not provide extra skill points, but says nothing about bonus spells. You get the bonus spell slots if you were wearing the headband during preparation. You lost uncast spell slots whenever you remove the headband during the day (or it gets sundered.) You do not (by RAW) regain them when you put the headband back on your head, but most DM's rule you get them back. |

And if that character also took levels in Sorcerer and had an ability-boosting item to get bonus spells for the Sorcerer too, they would "bed with others" while insisting on wearing the headband and a cape. |

| Cifer11-01-07, 12:48 PM | So... the reason I wake up with someone in my arm I wouldn't take to bed is that I insisted on them taking off their cloak and circlet? And I always feared it was because of the alcohol... |
