| Kouk09-08-07, 05:43 PM | My wife purchased a staff of fire, i have the dm's guide for this item and it does not say what the bonus is for this item, does anyone know what the bonuses is for this item? +1? +2? Staffs are not inherently magic weapons unless the description mentions something like that. A Staff is more akin to a large Wand than it is to a magic weapon, though you can make them into weapons if you want. I think by default a Staff is a normal Quarterstaff (or a staff equivalent to a quarterstaff in stats) or a Club, but you could just say it is automatically a Masterwork weapon just because you are spending so much time and money on the item, why not use a masterwork item as the base? Physical Description A typical staff is 4 feet to 7 feet long and 2 inches to 3 inches thick, weighing about 5 pounds. Most staffs are wood, but a rare few are bone, metal, or even glass. (These are extremely exotic.) Staffs often have a gem or some device at their tip or are shod in metal at one or both ends. Staffs are often decorated with carvings or runes. A typical staff is like a walking stick, quarterstaff, or cudgel. It has AC 7, 10 hit points, hardness 5, and a break DC of 24. I am taking "cudgel" to mean Club in terms of stats. If you assume it is always at least Masterwork, then a person could have it enchanted as normal (quarterstaves are double weapons, so you have to do each "side" of it individually, but clubs would not be). On the other hand, you might prefer to assume it is not Masterwork unless the creator pays an additional fee to get a masterwork staff or club (300gp). In this case, a non-masterwork Staff could not be enchanted because to enchant a weapon requires it be masterwork. |
