My group just added the Renaissance pistol & musket out of the DMG to the campaign, but I was wondering what kind of Craft check would be appropriate for gunpowder.

Does Craft (Alchemy) 23 sound good?

Replies are appreciated!

I have done the same thing but for i used the blackpowder for fireworks. We had it at a dc 20.

I think In d20 modern there are rules for making explosives with craft(chemichal). I'd use those for guidelines, but make reasonable restrictions or improve the DC's to accomadate for rennaissance-era technology. You can find the system reference document online easy enough, but it's better to get the book if you can. I'd love to make 'TNT' stick crossbow bolts and stick an enemy with a bunch, only to have the party's wizard cast scorching ray in the next round... priceless. Also, non-magical explosions should probably be more realistic, doing some bludgeoning damage in with the fire and perhaps acting like a bull-rush attempt (to simulate the force of the blast blowing people around and what knot). But that kind of thing is up to the DM and how much effort they are willing to put in to add realism.

Boom goes the dynamite

I've heard this phrase on the radio before. Do you happen to listen to the syndicated morning radio show, "Free Beer & Hot Wings?"

As for your question - Alchemy seems to be a good match, though as Evil_Bishi03 noted that prevents non-spellcasters from making the substance. You could go with Engineering, though it's not a great match, if you want to avoid that issue. You could probably also go with Nature, given what gunpowder is made from...

Boom goes the dynamite is a phrase that some college kid made up and then it got picked up by the likes of ESPN, Fox Sports, etc.

thanks for the responses. I'm making it a Craft skill but toiling over the category.

I'm actually the DM and it works well into my Campaign.

Gunpowder is rather hard to make, especially without modern chemistry.

now -Black Powder- on the other hand, is simple to make and was the standard in firearms up until probaby the Civil War.

Incedentally, Dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel... he created his peace prize to make up for the terrible power he unleashed into the world.

To make dynamite you have to first make nitroglycerin. Once you have nitroglycerin making dynamite is really simple (something along the lines of very very slowly add clay powder). A DC 23 is really too small when you are dealing with things that dangerous. I would either raise the DC or add a caveat along the lines of poisoning yourself while applying poison (only instead of being poisoned you get nasty 3rd degree burns from the nitro exploding in your face).
