| Zavarov10-20-06, 01:59 PM | Heya, My players want to buy "Boots of Silence", an item they thought of themselves, and I am having trouble determining if and for what price I should let them have it. The boots should be able to cast Silence for 10 rounds a day as a free action, spread out as they like (kinda like Boots of Haste). It's the "as a free action" part that baffles me. This would of course be extremely strong... should I just flatout not allow it? If not, how much should I ask for it? What if they decide it doesn't have to be a free action? How high should I set the price for the 10 rounds, spread out as they like? Thanks! |
| Dalthbar10-20-06, 02:12 PM | I would move towards a Swift Action instead of a Free Action. They probably won't notice a functional difference and it's a bit less powerful. I haven't seen rules for making things swift actions, but I tend to just multiply the effect by 2 unless the item is horribly abusive (remember, we're pricing for power, not blindly following formula). So for silence, we have 2 * 4 * 1,800 * 2 = 28,800. This would last for 40 rounds (CL = 4). That was if made by a Bard's silence. For a Cleric, it'd be 2 * 3 * 1,800 * 2 = 21,600gp for 30 rounds (CL = 3) Might want to just drop the price to 20,000gp - sounds nice and round. If I made any terrible mistakes I'm sure someone will point them out. :) |

The duration of the haste effect need not be consecutive rounds. Moderate transmutation; CL 10th; Craft Wondrous Item, haste; Price 12,000 gp;Weight 1 lb. If we were to price this item using standard pricing rules, they would have cost: 3*10*2000 (spell level 3 * caster level 10 [10 rounds of effect] * 2000) (60k GP) and they would not be free-actionable nor splitable to arbitrary rounds. Sometimes, however, it appears the rules get thrown out the window. If we used the base 30 number and divided it in to 12k, we get a multiplier of 400. Perhaps you can use that as a base. |

Probably the wrong method, most people agree the correct method is: 1,800*3(SL)*5(CL) /(5/2) = 10,800 gp 2/day = 10 rounds "Tax" to be able to free action use each individual round separate takes the price to 12,000 gp. My players want to buy "Boots of Silence", an item they thought of themselves, and I am having trouble determining if and for what price I should let them have it. The boots should be able to cast Silence for 10 rounds a day as a free action, spread out as they like (kinda like Boots of Haste). You want the activation a swift action on an item, then make it so. Most of the time this is done by adding the cost into the item as if the spell was quickened. If that increases the price too much, then make it cheaper like the Boots of Speed. Shackled of Silence cost 12,000 for an item that is perma Silence on a person at 2.5 ft radius. I would price a pair of Boots of Silence at the same price and allow 10 rounds a day with Swift activation on/off trigger for 2.5 ft radius. If you increased the radius to 5 ft, up the price to be 24,000 gp. |
