| Gyges10-14-05, 02:58 PM | Hi all. I think the price of this magic item is too cheap to be true. I recalculated the price using the table-guide from DMG 3.5... and i couldnt, because there is no entry for modifiers of activation time (free action in this item), so how do they calculate the 8000 gp that cost the boots?? |
| masterofmayhem10-14-05, 03:59 PM | Umm . . . by actually making the boots cost 12,000 gold? Boots of Speed As a free action, the wearer can click her boot heels together, enabling her to act as though affected by a haste spell for up to 10 rounds each day. The duration of the haste effect need not be consecutive rounds. Moderate transmutation; CL 10th; Craft Wondrous Item, haste; Price 12,000 gp;Weight 1 lb. SL x CL x 2,000 x ("Charges" per day/5) = Price 3 x 10 x 2,000 x (1/5) = 12,000 gold It's one "charge" because the effects of the haste spell last for one, ah, casting of the spell. That is, it works for a total of ten rounds, which is how long haste would work if casted by a tenth level caster. |

Thanks for your reply. |

| 573v310-15-05, 03:55 AM | what about making your own boots of speed, expedious retreat enchantment on boots? |
| masterofmayhem10-15-05, 01:03 PM | Sure you can. Assuming you pay through the nose for it. Those ones would definitely not follow the spell guidelines, since I believe they end up cheaper than boots of striding and springing. For 60,000 gold, you can get boots that grant a continuous haste effect, so around 30,000-40,000 gold sounds fair for the +30 movement granted by expeditious retreat continuously. |

Actually if you go by the magic creation rules... Boots of Expeditious Retreat are only like 4000 gold. |

Did you even bother reading the post you just quoted?? I need to just start copying and pasting this. The formula guidelines for the creation of magic items are supposed to be used last, with the primary method for pricing being to compare the desired item to an item of similar effect. So, no, boots that give +30 movement speed would not be cheaper than boots that give +10. Please, don't ever say something like that again. |

Boots of Striding and Springing are different because they give an added benefit of + bonus to jump skill, I think its +10, the spells for this are LONGSTRIDER and Jump Spell (which is TWO spells for that cost), not expeditious retreat.... Boots of Speed give +30 feet but they also give you an AC bonus and an extra attack per round as well and the spell base for this is Haste (which is a 3rd level spell). If you reverese engineer BOTH items with the DMG magic cretion rules and cost they fit PERFECTLY!!! There is nothing in game that you could draw from that has just a +30 foot base land movement increase. So before you go hacking someone's post about reading I suggest you go read yourself. |
| Oliver D'Argent10-15-05, 02:11 PM | Actually if you go by the magic creation rules... Boots of Expeditious Retreat are only like 4000 gold. That's what I came up with also. I am unsure if items using Expeditious Retreat or Longstrider would increase a Warlock's speed for Fell Flight though. Both spell descriptions specifically say that they have no effect on other modes of movement but the speed for Fell Flight is the same as the Warlock's land speed so, in the absence of an official ruling, it would ultimately be up to the DM's interpretation. |

Actually they dont boost your flight... they boost your BASE land speed which in effect will boost Fell Flight by Proxy... I actually have 2 other things on my boots that give my Warlock a total flight speed of 90 feet (well really 100 but that is special) with perfect maneurvability. Its not just a speed boost... its an increase to your base land speed and Fell Flight specifically states your flight speed is based off your base land speed. The only other thing that would boost your speed would be Elation (+5 luck bous to movement) so if you ever got a haste you speed wouldnt increase because Longstrider, Expeditous Retreat and Haste are all Enhancment bonuses. |
| masterofmayhem10-15-05, 02:41 PM | Boots of Striding and Springing are different because they give an added benefit of + bonus to jump skill, I think its +10, the spells for this are LONGSTRIDER and something else, not expeditious retreat.... They give a +5. So the +10 movement speed costs 2,000 gold. And once again, you entirely miss the point that the spells used to create a given item matter only for flavor and the ability of a caster to create it. Take the decanter of endless water, for example. The spell needed to create it is control water. So, with your literal interpretation of the spells deciding what the item does, it should not be able to make water, but only to control it, right? Boots of Speed give +30 feet but they also give you an AC bonus and an extra attack per round as well and the spell base for this is Haste. Yes, and boots of speed are usable for ten rounds per day. As opposed to your boots of expeditious retreat, which render horses obsolete due to their continuous functioning. There is nothing in game that you could draw from that has just a +30 foot base land movement increase. Which is precisely why I decreased the cost from boots that would give a continual haste effect. See, continual haste boots have the movement speed and other bonuses, so when you take away the other bonuses, logically the price would decrease. Do you see how that works? So before you go hacking someone's post about reading I suggest you go read yourself. And please, before you continue posting, go read chapter seven of the Dungeon Master’s Guide. The formulas are guidelines that are supposed to be used as a last resort. Why else would a ring of invisibility cost so much? Maybe because they arbitrarily jacked up the price to reflect the power of the item? Same thing here. No way are boots that just give +30 movement speed, straight up, going to cost 4,000 gold. That’s ridiculous. That's what I came up with also. Yes, that's because that's what the formulas will give you. I'm not at all saying that your math is wrong, here, people. I'm saying the formula shouldn't be used in this situation. If Fell Flight is based upon your base land speed, then, yes, both expeditious retreat and longstrider would increase it. Note, however, that boots of striding and springing are not the same as casting the spell longstrider, unless it specificaly says so. They are a magical item that is actually entirely independent from the exact effects of the spell used to create it. Just like the decanter does not have the same effect as the control water spell, so, too, do the boots not have the exact effect of the spell(s) used to create them, even if those effects seem extremely similar. Only the text for the item matters, not the spell, unless additional clarification is needed in some circumstances. Magical items are not spells, they are their own affects in and of themselves. The only other thing that would boost your speed would be Elation (+5 luck bous to movement) so if you ever got a haste you speed wouldnt increase because Longstrider, Expeditous Retreat and Haste are all Enhancment bonuses. I think there is also a pisonic armor/shield ability that increases base land speed. I don't know if you have that, but if you don't, and you are trying to become as fast as possible, you may want to look it up. |
