| DrRufio06-25-07, 04:35 PM | OK, I have a question about the price of a magical item. I think I know the answer but I just want some second opinions. I need some boots of striding but I do not need the springing enchantment on them. what would this item cost since there is no template for an increase in base speed? Going by some information in the DMG it looks like to me that they are non similar bonuses so the price of boots of striding and springing = the price of the two enchantments added together. A +5 skill bonus would cost 2,500 gold and 5,500 - 2,500 = 3,000 gold, making the boots cost 3,000 gold. Is this correct? Now for something more complicated. What would the price be for a 20ft speed increase or more? Going by the templates for the other bonuses and the assumed 3,000 gold price for +10 speed I am guessing it would be (speed bonus/10)^2*3,000 making it cost 12,000 gold for +20, 28,000 gold for +30, etc. Opinions? |

I am all in favor of min-maxing your CHARACTER, but magic item are another issue entirely. Making them is an art, not a science. You can't use those horrible formulas that are so easy to abuse and think "well, it most be right, I followed the formula." You should not be picking and choosing that much. The magic item stuff is in the DMG, not the PHB. Players should be asking for X, and the first thing the DMG should do is to say Y is available if it is close enough. As a DM, I would tell you that the Boots are cheap enough. If you yourself had the feats to make the item, I migth tell you you could reasearch a new item, cheaper that did less, but you would NOT be able to totally control what it did. |

| DrRufio06-25-07, 04:55 PM | I'm going to quote your sig: Strict = Stricter than WoTC, Loose = Spirit of WoTC, Power = Cool overides balance (but does not ignore it), Anything Goes = Ignore balance. There are different types of gameplay, I don't want to hear anyone's opinions about how D&D should be played, Only the price of the item. It's not like I am asking for anything unusual or overly powerful. How do you know I'm not the DM? |
| Pentar06-25-07, 04:58 PM | What the hell is with everyone suddenly asking for price checks on movement enhancing items?!? Is this month, "D&D Movement Optimization Month"?!? |
| Vegepygmy06-25-07, 06:54 PM | EDIT: never mind. |
| Forgember06-25-07, 06:59 PM | I would say to drop the price by 1 to 1.5k ;) |
