Many of you have probably seen something on the lines of what I am imagining in Sci-Fi shows, movies, and other media. You know, where there is this breathtaking woman (or a group of women) who seems able to enchant any man she comes across in an instant. The woman is usually physically pleasing, but to be honest no woman can really be that beautiful to do what she does. Later on in the show/movie/book/whatever the scientists (usually the female scientists, since all the male scientists and other men are already the alien's slaves) discover it is not actually her otherworldly beauty which has the men intrigued, but in fact it seems to be powerful hormones (or something similar made up by the writers) being released by a mysterious glad the woman/women/thing(s) posses in their bodies. The lady scientists then proceed to either develop some chemical/drug to unbrainwash the men (often called "The antidote"), isolate the seductive female, or just chop her up in some darker media.

I got to thinking that maybe this could be the case with the D&D MM Nymph.

Now lets say someone had ranks in alchemy, and managed to get some of this chemical (maybe snatch a Nymph's sweaty clothes or towel from the laundry bin?). Would it be possible to extract this essence and bottle it?

Could you then maybe synthesize this yourself?

How much would you price this item in your game?

How would you stat it and make it work?

Would you allow PCs to make it themselves? If so, how?

Um... if you're the DM, go for it.

I was actually thinking of trying to talk a DM into it. :D

I'd say you'd not only need ranks in Craft (alchemy), but also in Profession (physician) and the knowledge of the spell Gentle Repose.

You'd need the pheromones of the nymph. They don't wear much clothing, and sweat wouldn't probably be enough. You'd need the actual glands producing the pheromons, which you extract from the nymph's dead body.

Should be enough for an alignment shift. ;)

Good point.

Any ideas on how to do it without the needs to cut her open?

Maybe you can extract some with a needle?

Maybe a Nymph could be convinced to sell/trade for it?

I remember that there was an evil Nymph variant in a Wizards.com article somewhere. :thinks:

Yes, the Fearsome Unseelie Nymph.

It's a joke, really. It must be, else it wouldn't be so weak.

I don't know if any nymph would let you poke her with needles...

Reading this thread, I got the horrible image of a PC going up to a nymph asking to buy her worn "unmentionables" for a fee...

Isn't it a magical ability? in that case, you would need to duplicate a magical effect, not some kind of pheromone.

In which case, I'd imagine it'd be easier to do. At least you wouldn't have to walk up to a Nymph and get something out of her.

Though for male "nymph effect bottlers" I'd think there might be some slight problems relating to become strangely fascinated with the bottle the stuff would be in...

Take the elixir of love from the wondrous items section and rework it as a weaponized aerosol. Or change the effects of the incense of obsession from the cursed items section.

I would also imagine there would be a strong market for duplicating a nymph's stunning glance ability as well, for all the wives whose husbands keep falling under the effects of the pheromones.
