| Leilond07-09-07, 11:42 AM | As a wand mean you've to be able to cast true strike by yourself to use it, so you've to be a wizard/sorcerer or similar You lose a round to have +20 to the first attack roll of your next round only with that bow It would be "too much" if you put it on a two handed sword (because of power attack) and let it be used by a simple fighter |
| tarkin07-09-07, 01:03 PM | The basic problems with True Strike as a wand are 1. You need to be a wiz/sorc to use it., 2. It takes a standard action to use it on your NEXT attack. This means you spend one round to get a near certain hit next round. But normally you would already get a hit in a single round plus your next attack. ------- Benefits of True Strike. 1. When using to launch a magic item that you really need to hit with, such as an arrow of slaying. If you take it off a bow and put it on a sword, this benefit is gone. 2. When using a special ability that you really want to hit with, even if you sacrifice your bonus to attack. I.E. using Power Attack, a smite (or better yet a smite plus power attack while charging with a lance on horseback), 1/day ability, a spell you are casting, etc. Net net, unlimited truestrike is worth a lot, but ONLY if you focus your character on it. Just using it every other round is worthless. As always, a DM has to be a Power Gamer to just let in 3.0 stuff without examining it and considering modificication. Strict won't let it in at all, Loose will look it over and often modify it first. |

I don't know... a mid-high level thief with high UMD could use this to pretty good benefit with sneak attack. Since the duration is "On your next attack" it's a great spell to cast before combat. Starting every combat with a +20 sneak attack would be a nice touch. |
| Bedevere07-09-07, 04:06 PM | Fairly sure that True Strike only lasts one round, or your next attack, whichever comes first... |
| GMforPowergamers07-09-07, 04:33 PM | bakc in the 3.0 days I played in a game where the GM modified this item into a use actvated cross bow (Heavy). When ever the assasin would line up his death attack it would cast a third party spell that tripple sneak attack range on attacks the 1st round, a hast spell the second round, and true strike on the third. It was only useable by assasins, and It was deadly, I remember it was only worth like 30 or 40k gp. that was broken... |
| mtbOgre07-09-07, 05:22 PM | Fairly sure that True Strike only lasts one round, or your next attack, whichever comes first... d'oh.... I missed the part that said "before next round". Your next single attack roll (if it is made before the end of the next round) gains a +20 insight bonus. |
| M1kh43l_P4r4d1s007-09-07, 07:38 PM | No you don't need to be a wizard or sorc in order to use it. I said that you need to use it like a wand, aka it has a wand like activation. |
| risner07-11-07, 03:49 PM | No you don't need to be a wizard or sorc in order to use it. I said that you need to use it like a wand, aka it has a wand like activation. Which means you must have the spell on your spell list like a Wizard or Sorcerer has. What distinction are you making? |
| robitusinz07-11-07, 04:05 PM | Folks, the most expensive resource in D&D are actions. All a True Strike Bow does is let you trade 2 attacks for 1 sure-to-hit attack. A Fighter/Sorc could do the same thing, AND abuse Power Attack without a problem...it'd still cost him 2 actions to do so. Thus, even having this kind of ability on a Greatsword is as virtually worthless as a bow, as you'd be better off full-attacking away. |

With the difference that the you've to be a sorc and thus you cannot wear armor, less HP, less feats... a worst fighter True strike is a personal range spell. Thus you cannot brew it into a potion. Thus, allowing an item that grant true strike to someone that isn't able to cast it you're making something that isn't intended to be done Thus, even having this kind of ability on a Greatsword is as virtually worthless as a bow, as you'd be better off full-attacking away. You forgot some things 1) Disarm (grab item). With +20 your going to disarm a titan from his two handed hammer 2) Sunder 3) True strike prevent ANY miss chance due to concealment |
| turalisj07-12-07, 07:55 AM | A warlock with a wand of true strike is truly evil.... +20 to his eldritch blast every other round means he can use risky tactics to pump up his damage. |
