It seems that non-bow/arrow ranged weapons get kind of shafted and ignored. For example, the only other decent dedicated projectile weapon I can find in the WHOLE game is the Warsling and it is exotic and has half or less the range incremement. Furthermore, several of the ranged weapon feats specifically mention arrows, for example, manyshot. So, I am not allowed to use manyshot with my warsling yet manyshot is a prereq for other ranged weapon feats. That sucks. If it were up to me I would simply say that manyshot CAN be used with slings, this simply involves laoding more than one projectile into the sling (this was actually done in real life with small shot for small birds).

There is certainly a very obvious general lack of mention of other projectile weapons besides bow based ones.

I would have no problem letting Manyshot work with slings.

The only argument I can think of against it is that slings let you add your strength bonus to damage for free. I don't know about the warsling, but with a normal sling, you'll need four points more Strength just to make up for the base damage. I doubt there's ever a point in a character's career where +4 Str costs less than a composite bow with an appropriate strength rating.

As for why, I assume the designers wanted to reflect the more or less historical fact that bows are better than any other ranged weapon.

You have several options with thrown weapons:

There's Brutal Throw and Power Throw from Complete Adventurer that let you use your str mod for the attack roll, and let you power attack with thrown weapons, respectively.

There's also the Hurling Charge feat from the Miniatures Handbook that lets you throw a weapon as part of a charge.

The only other one I can think of at the moment is Improved Rock Hurling from Races of Stone, which lets you throw rocks for 2d6 + str.
