I had an idea for a weapon/shield.

It's a shield with a hole in it. There is a bow attached to its handle, so you can shoot while the shield protects you.

Interesting, so like a shield, with the hole in it, a crossbow would make more sense, and the actual handle to the shield would be the crossbow handle so your holding both the cross bow and the shield it's embedded in :P ?

That... actually makes a lot of sense.

Perhaps... too much sense.

Tower shield + longbow working at the same time = fun fun fun. :0

How would you aim? Normally, you sight a bow by looking down the arrow, unless you have a peep sight, which is basically impossible in D&D.

If it's like a tower shield or something, there can be a small rectangular opening right above the cross bow were you can look through and aim :P

I'd hate to have to shoot straight up, but alright.

First, the crossbow shield thing. The hole in the shield through which the quarrel passes would act as the peep sight. Not a problem.

Second, the bow, and shield. :rolleye2: Rather than the bow shooting out at right angles to the shield, it would be fitted on one side, and shoot parallel to the plane of the shield. This, would be usable, as bow, or shield, but not both at once.

:ahem: Neither of these items was used IRL so there must be some reason why they don't work. Sigh. :allalone:

Integrating a crossbow would be much easier, especially given how you can hold your face a lot closer whatever kind of peephole you make (whereas it would have to be at arm's length for a bow). The thing would probably be unusable unless you actually dropped to the ground with it, but it would offer decent defense if you did that (as cover or improved cover). I really don't see anyone being able to fire a crossbow attached to any kind of sizable shield very easily without propping it, though.

Hmm. The orignal poster's idea was a bow with a sheild mounted in front. . . I like it.

However. . .

What if we moved that sheild from the front, to the side. Basically picture a bow with a sheild hammered to the curved wooden but, but with the metal of the sheild sculpted to accomidate for a hand to gripe the wooden curve, and logical steps taken so that the released string would not strike the sheild, ruining the shot and possibly the string. . . Hmm. . .

Exotic Ranged Weapon
Two Handed
Long Bow Sheild / 50 gp / d8 (medium) / 60 ft Range
Short Bow Sheild / 40 gp / d6 (medium) / 40 ft Range

Long/Short Bow Sheild:
This oddly crafted weapon is an alternative crafted by Elven Rangers who wished to maintain efficient (and alive) while in long range skirmishes.

A sheild bow may be used as either a bow, or a sheild, but not both, the wielder has the Sheild Archer feat. It takes a Swift Action to designate the weapon as either bow or sheild. The size of the bow determines the level of protection the sheild grants. Long bows are the equivalent to heavy steel sheilds, while short varities are counted as light steel sheilds.

Because the Bow Sheild occupies the main hand, Sheild Bashes are possible (while being held as a sheild), as of course are range attacks (when held as a bow), but neither may happen as an off hand extra attack. For example, a 6th level Ranger may make two Sheild Bashes, or two ranged attacks, or one of each (with the Sheild Archer feat), but not two ranged attacks and then a sheild bash because the Ranger does not yet qualify for an third attack due to high Base Attack Bonus.

Users proficient with the bow sheild make count feats that apply to the long/short bow and feats that apply to the heavy/light steel sheild to the bow sheild.

Sheild bows may be enchanted, but the bow and sheild must be done seperately, as per rules of sheild spikes.

Sheild bows may be built in composite varities, as per standard long/short bow rules, damage, and pricing.

Sheild bows may contain sheild spikes, as per rules of equipping them onto a sheild.

Long Bow Sheild Proficiency <Exotic Weapon Proficiency>

Benfit You may use the long bow sheild as a long bow without a -4 penalty to attack rolls, or as a heavy steel sheild without taking the armor check penalty to attack rolls.

Benfit You may use the short bow sheild as a short bow without a -4 penalty to attack rolls, or as a light steel sheild without taking the armor check penalty to attack rolls.
Special A Fighter may take Long Bow Sheild Proficiency as a bonus feat.

Sheild Archer

Actually, they had shields with guns built into them IRL.

http://humanitiestexas.org/resource_center/exhibits_c3.htm

no pics, but mention of the gun/shield combo.

I looked around, but I can't seem to find a pic. Though I have seen a pic before, a long time ago.

No F'ing way.

Like someone else said, that thing would be way too heavy.

You would be holding the full weight of a shield, in one hand, in a fully extended arm. Worse, you would then be trying to aim an arrow with all that extra weight. Your sight webble would be horrid.

The OP needs to set down the D&D, and go invest some time in developing his manhood. A little bit of time invested in marksmanship and weight training would explain why this idea wouldn't work.
