| SqweeXV10-19-05, 06:51 PM | Is there any way to have a monk use a brass nuckles type object and actually increase the damage? All the ways I have found do the same damage as just punching |
| Vestigial_Thumb10-19-05, 07:07 PM | I'd rule a -1 on attack rolls and +1 on damage rolls (as if you were using Power Attack). |
| primemover00310-19-05, 07:17 PM | A Monk's fists eventually become harder than mere brass... why would you want them? It's the same argument as using gauntlets... |
| Tony Vargas10-19-05, 07:19 PM | Brass knuckles wouldn't reasonably increase a monk's unarmed damage. The obvious weapon equivalancy would be the gauntlet (which just makes unarmed damage lethal). |
| Vestigial_Thumb10-19-05, 07:35 PM | Uh... have you guys actually tried punching some... thing with knuckles. They're heavy and they hurt a lot more. Also, maybe he thought about knuckles for a rogue or some other character. |
| Tsuul10-19-05, 07:58 PM | I agree with Tony and would have them deal leathal damage instead of subdual. There was an old Dragon Magazine magic item that increases the damage of unarmed strikes one step, it was (i think) called a "Clawed Ring" or "Ring of Fang" |
| ShinAkuma210-19-05, 08:00 PM | Punching with a spiked gauntlet would hurt about as much as with brass knuckles. A monk's fist does more damage than that. Brass knuckles would in no way enhance a monk's attack (barring magical enhancement). As was stated, it be pretty much the same thing as a gauntlet, ie not useful to a monk at all. If your rogue has gauntlets, feel free to call them brass knux. |

All the ways I have found do the same damage as just punching I made my own but can't acco8nt for its balance so just for reference: Knuckle Busters Type: Bludgeoning Damage: +2 Weight: ½ pound. Cost: 1 gp These tough knuckle are a good defense against defending a sword. It deal 2 extra lethal damage with your unarmed strikes. A strike with a knuckle buster is otherwise considered an unarmed attack but it doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. The cost and weight given are for a single knuckle. They also add +4 to disarm checks when used. So they add +2: not greatest but decent. +4 Disarm also. |

Also, maybe he thought about knuckles for a rogue or some other character. Yes, brass knuckles would hurt a lot more than a fist for you or me. But a monk's punch is like taking a hit with a BASEBALL BAT at first level! As he levels up, his fists are dealing far more damage than a mere bit of metal could help with. He's a quasi-magical kung-fu warrior -- these are the guys in those badly dubbed movies who punch through concrete walls and keep going. A set of knux is just a gauntlet-equivalent in any case. Use the rules and stats for a gauntlet; the rest is just flavor. Declare that it's brass knuckles instead of a gauntlet, I'm sure your DM will be happy to go with that, if you want to use them for a rogue character. |
