| Bihlbo08-30-07, 11:41 AM | I seem to be challenged in my information mining abilities. I can't seem to find a good source for the rules on breaking an item and how you use and determine the break DC. For instance, are there guidlines for typical break DCs for items and materials, in case a character makes a new magic item? When does the break DC come into play? Isn't sundering an item handled differently? Thanks! |

It should almost always take at least two rounds for large objects. If you want to break down a door in one quick action, then you instead use a break DC. Also, Sundering is based on total hitpoints and thickness. The Break DC however is ALWAYS based on the weakest point of the entire object. I.E. if there is a chain with a weak link (i.e. a clasp) and you try to pull the chain apart, that is a Break DC, and the fact that the strong links are made of adamantine does not matter, all that matters is the strength of the weak link. But if you are say sundering the chain and the weak link is out of your reach, then you are attacking the strong links near you, which may be made of adamantine. I would compare the entire object to similar objects alread stated out and see which piece was hardest to improve and judge how much that piece was improved. Breaking is always a single action, but it should generally be harder to do than simply making a Sundering attack that does damage. Sundering takes more time, but usually is easier to do at least a succesfull attack. But you generally need many succesfull attacks to complete the job. |

Also, I should probably take a look (later) through the articles on the site and see if there's been any FAQ's answered about this or more information there I could glean. |

| SpoonyBard09-06-07, 08:50 PM | Wow... Only a 50 DC to break through three feet of hewn stone? How thick is the average stone wall? 5', 10'? You do realize that requires a a strength score of 90 to do on a 10, don't you? Nobody but Kord has strength that high. |
| EjoThims09-07-07, 07:55 AM | Nobody but Kord has strength that high. It's actually quite an easy DC to hit... especially since one feat gives you a +8 bonus on your check while raging. |
