| Arien_Drajanuma11-07-06, 08:01 AM | How's this? Quicken true strike and place it 3 times on a weapon. This is a logical answer to give you a weapon that hits with a +20 3/day, and it would cost: 5 (quickened truestrike) x 9 (to cast 5th lvl spells) x 2000 = 90000 gp (1/day) let's apply the rule of the staffs, and say that the 2nd and 3rd addition of true strike it's at only 3/4 and 1/2 price, that would be: 90000 gp (1/day) + 67500 gp (2/day) + 45000 gp (3/day) = 202500 GP then add a +4 enhancement, a masterwork weapon (let's say an adamantine greatsword) and you have a new weapon: Grand Blade of Accuracy: this +4 adamantine greatsword is a great one-hit kill weapon, favored by reckless warriors and barbarians. 3 times per day it can deliver a single blow with a +20 bonus to the attack roll. Strong divination, CL 17. Create magic arms and armor, quicken spell true strike. 235550 gp. It's very expensive, but it's also effective. Combine it with power attack to devastating effect Please review this guys. The idea seems plausible, but I'd like your opinion. |
| risner11-07-06, 08:35 AM | 5 (quickened truestrike) x 9 (to cast 5th lvl spells) x 2000 = 90000 gp (1/day) I like 240,000 for 3/day better |
| tarkin11-07-06, 10:33 AM | WoTC gave a good solid base price of 400,000 gp for an always on ring of true strike 3/day is supposed to be 3/5 that price, or that 240,000 gp. But that would be activation as a free action (as the ring was always on and needed no activation). |
| starfire31111-07-06, 10:43 AM | WoTC gave a good solid base price of 400,000 gp for 5/day true strike. That was WITHOUT the quicken. where and when was that, they printed a bow of true striking that took a standard action to activate and you could use it at will, and it was much less than 400k. personally I think a true striking enhancement that takes a standard action to activate is not broken, I think once you get into the area of quickened true strike you need to be careful. |
| risner11-07-06, 11:03 AM | where and when was that, they printed a bow of true striking that took a standard action to activate and you could use it at will, and it was much less than 400k. 1st you are dead wrong. 2nd, You didn't think to spend 1 second trying to find it? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22true+strike%22+%22400%2C000+gp%22 1st link on google "true strike" "400,000 gp" There is no such bow. There is only two items (The 60,000 gp 1/day and the 12,000 gp 3/day ranged only and owner only quiver.) Both published in Dragon Mag, so less authoritative than WotC website. |
| starfire31111-07-06, 12:28 PM | 1st you are dead wrong. never claimed to be infallaible, but I dont think this is a matter of life or death. 2nd, You didn't think to spend 1 second trying to find it? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22true+strike%22+%22400%2C000+gp%22 1st link on google "true strike" "400,000 gp" ok and if you read it sage not pricing out a standard actived true strike, he is pricing out a use-activated true strike item, this is why that article is not pertinant to this discussion, hence my asking when and where wotc said a 5/day true strike is worth 400k.... it is not in the article I found on my google search. There is no such bow. There is only two items (The 60,000 gp 1/day and the 12,000 gp 3/day ranged only and owner only quiver.) Both published in Dragon Mag, so less authoritative than WotC website. check page 76 of sword and fist, bow of true arrows Cost 4000gp for a bow that lets you cast true strike as a spell trigger(only takes a standard action), and lets you do it "any number of times" [Edited some woding to clarify.] |
| Arien_Drajanuma11-07-06, 12:45 PM | check page 76 of sword and fist, bow of true arrows Cost 4000gp for a bow that lets you cast true strike as a spell trigger(only takes a standard action), and lets you do it "any number of times" Any number of times? but I guess you have to use a standard action to activate it and it only applies to next attack made and then discharges, right? I'd never allow it otherwise, not at 4000 gp anyway I don't have sword and fist, sorry, otherwise I'd check it myself |
| starfire31111-07-06, 01:15 PM | Any number of times? but I guess you have to use a standard action to activate it and it only applies to next attack made and then discharges, right? I'd never allow it otherwise, not at 4000 gp anyway I don't have sword and fist, sorry, otherwise I'd check it myself it works just like the spell true strike, true strike only works on your next attack. |
| risner11-07-06, 05:01 PM | 5/day true strike is worth 400k check page 76 of sword and fist, bow of true arrows Cost 4000gp for a bow that lets you cast true strike as a spell trigger(only takes a standard action), and lets you do it "any number of times" 5/day is the same price as unlimited. Also, you had me going on that bow until I looked it up. It is spell triggered, so you are required to have the spell on a class spell list to use the item. This means it isn't relevant to discussion on this thread. |
| starfire31111-07-06, 06:55 PM | 5/day is the same price as unlimited. yes it is, but it is not the same as use-activated, a use activated item does not take an action to use. Hence the 400k price tag sage gave it, if he were to stat out a spell triggered or command word activated item it owuld be much cheaper. Also, you had me going on that bow until I looked it up. It is spell triggered, so you are required to have the spell on a class spell list to use the item. This means it isn't relevant to discussion on this thread. how is it not relavant, it lets you cast true strike at will all day long, and it only cost 4k GP. It is easy to do... UMD, or take one level in any number of classes that could get it... it is so easy to do that I dont thin that it is worth multiplying the price by 100 times to allow anyone to use it, I think simply doubling it to 8k would be good enough... heck if I had a fighter that had a command word activated true strike, odds are I would get to the benefits of true strike on my 1st attack each battle, and then not a gain for the rest of the battle, casting true strike, during a battle, is just not worth it for a fighter 90% of the time. and I did say bow of true arrows Cost 4000gp for a bow that lets you cast true strike as a spell trigger(only takes a standard action), and lets you do it "any number of times" |
| risner11-08-06, 12:36 AM | command word activated item it owuld be much cheaper. No it would be the same. how is it not relavant, it lets you cast true strike at will all day long, and it only cost 4k GP. Ok, it is now clear to me that you don't have a handle on item creation. That item is not relevant, come up with another item that isn't spell triggered or accept that your point isn't valid. |
| Manic Man11-08-06, 04:26 AM | Um, a standard action to activate true strike makes it pretty yucky. The brokeness of a true strike use activated sword/bow whatever is that it gives you your full attack at +20 all attacks. Also 3.0 material is not really applicable for 3.5 now, as a lot of broken stuff was in 3.0 (sparring dummy of the master???) and they updated most of the stuff in the complete series |
| Arien_Drajanuma11-08-06, 07:22 AM | Um, a standard action to activate true strike makes it pretty yucky. The brokeness of a true strike use activated sword/bow whatever is that it gives you your full attack at +20 all attacks. I think that's a bit overpowered, that's why I made the sword on this thread gice you the +20 as a free action, but only on 1 attack basically it's 3 attacks pero day at +20 (and you can't use them on the same round) |
| Wonton200611-08-06, 08:50 AM | 5/day is the same price as unlimited. Now do you really think that? Come on, those are just guidelines. I could see someone arguing a point that Haste 5 times/day is same as Haste at will, because it lasts 10 minutes/level. But true strike... are you saying that you only make 5 attacks in a single day when you're a fighter? Personally, I like his idea. And remember, folks, the True Strike spell says "Your next single attack roll", so all items involving True Strike would only give it for one attack. If it gives +20 for multiple attacks, it ain't true strike anymore. |
| starfire31111-08-06, 09:07 AM | No it would be the same. now you are the one that is lost if you think a command word activated item is the same cost as a use activated item, actually this ruins any and all credibilty you may have had. Use activated is free action to activate, command word is standard, why in the world would you price them the same... Ok, it is now clear to me that you don't have a handle on item creation. That item is not relevant, come up with another item that isn't spell triggered or accept that your point isn't valid. you just dont get it do you, the 1st step in item creation is to compare to existing items. Sage stated out a use activated(free action), unlimitied use, true strike item at 400k gp, and there is spell trigger(standard action), unlimited use, true strike item for 4k gp Both of those are relevant when determining the cost of a swift action activated true strike item usable 3/day. actually if you split the difference, (400k+4k)/2 = 202K this actually works out to be really close to what the OP had. |
| Millennium11-08-06, 09:19 AM | Why are people so obsessed with making a game-breaking weapon so cheaply anyway? |
| Fargren11-08-06, 09:31 AM | Why does this thread appear at least once every month? |
| Arien_Drajanuma11-08-06, 10:43 AM | Why does this thread appear at least once every month? Sorry about that Fargren, I'm really new to the forum and I've checked around. I know the issue has been brought up before, but I really couldn't find a solid andswer or solution, so I thought this sword or "idea" I had would basically contribute to the discussion. Maybe I should have posted it in an existing thread, but there's more than 1 so where to post it? besides what I really wanted was an opinion if the sword was price/power balanced and if the METHOD to create it was right. |
| risner11-08-06, 12:42 PM | Use activated is free action to activate, command word is standard, why in the world would you price them the same... DMG p213 "Unless stated otherwise, activating a use-activated magic item is either a standard action" Care to rethink your position? you just dont get it do you, the 1st step in item creation is to compare to existing items. I get that part really well. The OP's item wasn't spell triggered, so a spell triggered item isn't a similar item. You can't take an example spell triggered (requires the spell on a spell list) as a reason to lower the price of an item any more than you could take the fact that all spells 4th and lower have Wands available as a reason to lower the price. |
| starfire31111-08-06, 02:08 PM | DMG p213 "Unless stated otherwise, activating a use-activated magic item is either a standard action" Care to rethink your position? I love how you quote a very small part of a much larger paragraph and somehwo think that prooves your point. Use Activated: This type of item simply has to be used in order to activate it. A character has to drink a potion, swing a sword, interpose a shield to deflect a blow in combat, look through a lens, sprinkle dust, wear a ring, or don a hat. Use activation is generally straightforward and self-explanatory. Many use-activated items are objects that a character wears. Continually functioning items are practically always items that one wears. A few must simply be in the character’s possession (on his person). However, some items made for wearing must still be activated. Although this activation sometimes requires a command word (see above), usually it means mentally willing the activation to happen. The description of an item states whether a command word is needed in such a case. Unless stated otherwise, activating a use-activated magic item is either a standard action or not an action at all and does not provoke attacks of opportunity, unless the use involves performing an action that provokes an attack of opportunity in itself. If the use of the item takes time before a magical effect occurs, then use activation is a standard action. If the item’s activation is subsumed in its use and takes no extra time use activation is not an action at all. Use activation doesn’t mean that if you use an item, you automatically know what it can do. You must know (or at least guess) what the item can do and then use the item in order to activate it, unless the benefit of the item comes automatically, such from drinking a potion or swinging a sword. yes drinkiing a potion to activate a potion of cure light wounds is a standard action, just like drinking a flask of water takes a standard action, but getting the benefit of the cure light wounds in the potion does not take any action at all. a use activated sword of true strike would get a true strike for free everytime you use it, IE make an attack... that is the kind of item sage says is worth 400k a command word activated sword of true strike would require you to use a standard action to activate true strike, and then you would get the effects on your next attack. You somehow think that these swords should both be priced the same. the 1st weapon is increbdibly good, the second is mediocre at best. |
