Is there still a broadsword in D&D? If so, what are the stats on it please?

I'm not sure on the exact the stats, but I think their similar to a longsword's.

Don't qoute me on that though.

Longsword.

And if some add-on designer has gone and made separate stats for it, s/he ought to be jailed for Cluttering With Intent.

No.

( Long Answer: )

The term 'broadsword' is a meaningless 'Enlightenment' term for any sword wider in the blade than a rapier. This means that every sword in D&D, except for the rapier, is, in fact, a broadsword.

So they are somewhere between 10% and 30% cheaper than otherwise equivalent swords?

It seems you underestimate the size of the female Wizards population.

If you look in the Munchkin card game, there is in fact a weapon called a broadsword usable only be females. I still prefer it's male equivelent, the Gentleman's Club.

And do you know how tempting it is to ask about the hardness of the Gentleman's Club?
Seerow

Well, I don't know about it's hardness, but I'd say it's at -least- 24 inches long.

In the Sword and Fist they made a table that gave weapon equivalinces(SP?), and Broadsword was the equivalent of the longsword.

Don't forget it can be used as a ranged weapon, but making such an attack is a full-round action at the very least.

On a side note, how long do you think it'll take for a WizO to lock this thread? My money's on 15 minutes or less.

To answer the original question:

Depends on how you envisage the sword.

Is it a big, two-handed weapon? Greatsword or greataxe mechanics (depends on how you see your character using it).
Is it a one-handed chopper? Longsword or battleaxe.
Can it be used either way? Bastard sword or dwarven waraxe.

Screw the fluff text (that includes the D&D name of the weapon) and use the mechanics. Just call it a broadsword, describe it as looking like one and be done with it.

I was picturing it as having a wider blade and a one-handed pommel. In AD&D it was listed as doing 2d4 or 2d6 (I can't remember, as it has been 20 years since I played AD&D) points of damage as a M-sized weapon. Can anyone chime in here and help, instead of being sarcastic about my valid question?

Dude...several people already told you no. As in, there isn't a "broadsword" in D&D anymore.

Side note - I believe you meant "one-handed hilt" rather than "pommel" - the pommel is the counter-weight to the blade, and isn't a typical grip (although I've seen styles where people did this; however, I'm unsure as to the historical accuracy of such styles. I'm sure Vahenir or Johannixx can clarify there).

Thank you. That's all I wanted to know. I thought that all the no's were for other people about their answers. I guess it is an oversight on keeping the broadsword in 3.0 and 3.5 versions. Also, thank you on my mistake on the sword part I was referencing. That is what I meant. *Doh!* on my part.

Look no further than the 4th post in this thread (and the two preceeding it) - they're all quite obviously in direct response to you. I only pointed out the 4th post because it's the first one with a definitive "No".

Can anyone chime in here and help, instead of being sarcastic about my valid question? The AD&D broadsword did 2-8/2-7, and was just a heavier (wider-bladed) sword.

The D&D sword 'names' are descriptive, rather than historical. A longsword is just longer than a shortsword, which is just shorter than other swords, while a greatsword is just really big, requiring two hands, and a 'bastard' sword just between the great & long versions in size. A paleo-D&D 'broad'sword, then would just be a one-handed sword that's wider along the blade, and thus heavier; you do see the name used (as Vanhenir pointed out), as a term historically used to designate sword heavier than contemporaneous rapiers, by antiquarians specifically to refer to certain types of single-edged swords with basket hilts, and, in fantasy fiction to describe, big, wide-bladed swords with rudimentary points.

If you want to include such an apocryphal weapon in your D&D game, you could harken back to the AD&D stats, and give it 2d4 (20/x2) slashing damage, as a one-handed, martial weapon - stats which reflect it's (ahistorical) reputation as a heavy, unsophisticated cutting weapon. I also like to give it a few more hps than usual for a bladed weapon, to further model the 'heavy weapon' feel (nothing to do with realism, obviously, since we're not talking about a real historical weapon, at all).

Other options would include counting it as a longsword; counting it as a longsword, but giving the longsword piercing & slashing and the broadsword slashing-only; counting it as a bastard sword (again, possibly with the same slashing-only distinction); or having it work as a bastard sword for proficiency (exotic one-handed, martial two), but giving it 2d4 (19-20/x2) damage, just to be a little different.

Actually in the EverQuest d20 RPG there IS a broadsword. I personally see a "longsword" and "broadsword" as two different weapons. The broadsword is heavier and thicker (hence a little slower but does more damage).

The stats in the EQRPG rulebook are:

Broad Sword: This middle-length blade is unusually wide, making it good for hacking as well as slashing. The difference is subtle, and for seriouis hacking, an axe is the weapon of choice.

Martial Weapon - one-handed - 13gp - 1d10 dmg - x2 crit - 6 lbs - Slashing

I'm using it with my new Knight character actually. I really dig it. Less criticals but slightly more damage. Fair trade to me if you compare to the other weapons and how they compare.

The OP asked if there was a broadsword in D&D, not if there was a broadsword in the entire scope of the d20 system. Big difference. Your point is moot.

There is also a broadsword in the Conan RPG. Which, again, would be irrelevant to the question posed.

Total fantasy, anyway. An 'unusually wide' blade would make for a pretty crappy weapon.

In any event, the answer has already been given. D&D hasn't had a 'broadsword' since 2E, and whatever one considers to be a broadsword is, generally speaking, covered by the 'longsword' entry.
