would it be possible for a fighter to wear a buckler on his good hand and carry a shield in his off-hand?

Yes, he could, but it would be useless, since shield bonuses to AC don't stack, so all the buckler would be doing is giving him -1 to attacks with his main hand.

Would you be weilding a weapon in your primary hand? If so, you would not get the buckler AC bonus, and take minuses on attack. It is generally not a good idea, since there is nothing to gain and more to lose.

Is this because he doesn't have a weapon?

You could attack with the 1d6/1d4 Shield Bash as the primary attack with the off-hand shield with no -1 attack penalty. He would retain the Buckler AC when attacking. If the Shield AC was higher than the buckler he would lose it while attacking (unless Improved Shield Bash.) Otherwise take the higher AC between the two.

Main reason for the post, I got to ask, why would anyone want to do this? What is the upside (unless my theory is right, they have no weapons and only a buckler and shield.)

I think he means that he uses the buckler only for defence and the large shield only for attack, just like he could use a longsword or some other one-handed weapon.

sorry, i should have worded that better. what i mean to ask is would it be possible for a fighter attacking with a bastard sword to wear a buckler on his primary hand, taking the -1 penalty to attacks, wear a shield on his off-hand and benefit from both ac bonuses? a fighter in my campaign claims he can do this but i always thought ac shield bonuses do not stack.

That is because they don't stack.

Of course you could always make a feat to allow them to stack.

1) He would take the -1 penalty to attacks.
2) He would ONLY get the AC of the higher AC shield (probably the shield not the buckler.)
3) How in the world did he ever get the idea he could do that?

How would this benefit anyone?
Well if the person had taken improved buckler defense, he could still get the benefits of the buckler on his on-hand. If the buckler and the other shield had different enhancements (besides the boost in AC), these different enhancements would still apply, but the shield bonus would only be the highest of the two.
