Is there a way to use a buckler while THF not TWF?

Some people allow the Improved Buckler Defense feat to apply in these situations. This application is somewhat controversial.

That aside, there's the floating property...

By "floating" I'm assuming you meant "Animated".

As for the buckler, you can always use the buckler while fighting with a two-handed weapon(though you take the -1 penalty on attacks). But, you lose the AC bonus when you make an attack.

The Improved Buckler Defense feat allows you to retain the buckler's AC bonus when you make an attack with a weapon in your offhand(which, by most peoples standards, applies to both two weapon fighting and fighting with a two handed weapon, lest the Buckler Paradox* occur).

*Buckler Paradox: An argument used to confirm the use of IBD with a two-handed weapon, it centers on the congruent phrasing of the buckler and IBD.

Buckler:
In any case, if you use a weapon in your off hand, you don’t get the buckler’s AC bonus for the rest of the round.

Improved Buckler Defense:
When you attack with a weapon in your off hand, you may still apply your buckler’s shield bonus to your Armor Class.

Both of these use the phrase "use a weapon in your offhand" exactly. Which means that either Improved Buckler Defense DOES apply to both Two-handed weapons as well as two-weapon fighting, or that the feat does NOT apply, and therefor weilding a Two-handed weapon does not count as weilding a weapon "in your offhand" (meaning you retain the AC bonus when using a two-handed weapon)...

Er, yeah. That's the one. (Where did "floating" come from...?)

And that's one of the sanest IBD arguments I've read in a while.

Seconded. I hadn't read that one anywhere, oddly enough... maybe because I stopped reading those arguments. :P

I'd consider that using a two handed weapon implies that it is wielded in the off-hand and in the main hand, since it is a TWO-handed weapon.
Which would mean that you normally don't get your AC bonus if you use a two-handed weapon and strap a buckler, but you do get the AC bonus if you have IBD.

Then there's the "use" issue. Is "using" a weapon merely having it in your hands (you're "using" it to threaten attack of opportunities, for example), or is it really attacking? If it is the former, you would lose the AC bonus just for holding the weapon in two hands, while if it is the latter, you would lose the AC bonus if you attacked (let's say you lose the bonus for the remainder of the round).

I'm kind of surprised no one else mentioned this

You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whether you are actually using an off hand weapon or using your off hand to help wield a two-handed weapon), but you take a -1 penalty on attack rolls while doing st because of the extra weight on your arm.

This should be stickied.

Uh, because the relevant part of the rules is where it says "if you do that, you don't get the buckler's AC bonus"?

Yes, but the original post didn't say that. How was I to know?
