| JulesCARV04-12-06, 03:42 PM | For some reason, our party seems to have a large number of charisma-dependent characters. Our party consists of: -A Dhakaani goblin ninja (the only basically charisma-independent party member) -A Zilargoan (I think) dwarf artificer (higher UMD checks are always nice) -A half-elf Aundairian paladin-bard (with the devoted performer feat) of the Silver Flame (my character) -A human ex-Cyrean warmage -A human favored soul of the Sovereign Host, particularly Dol Arrah and Dol Dorn (uncertain of nationality) Since three of our characters are charisma based, and the artificer finds charisma useful too, do you think that there's some way I could convince the DM that we could get a discount on purchasing identical charisma boosting items "in bulk?" Like, say, maybe making them together is cheaper, since the rituals can be performed on the cloaks collectively? Would it make sense? Or I am just being a horrid munchkin in dire need of a neck-arrow? |
| risner04-12-06, 04:49 PM | Your best bet is to have someone in the pary take Craft Wondrous Item. That will get you a bulk discount of 50% off. |
| Puca04-12-06, 05:03 PM | So, you want to vastly improve the capabilities of 4/5 of the party and, on top of that, at a discount because theyre all being improved the same way? Does your DM drink? :pint: I dont think it will fly otherwise. |
| Vaelan04-12-06, 05:25 PM | Everybody wants more Constitution, so we should get great rates on Constitution-boosting items! Bulk-rate discounts are due to an overwhelming supply. I doubt anyone has an overwhelming supply of cloaks of charisma. |
| Ithamar04-12-06, 05:48 PM | If your DM is smart he will have whatever merchant you go to when you buy the cloaks actually practice the law of supply and demand. Normally the cloaks are X,000 GP, but all of a sudden they are very popular and the price goes up 10% or so. |
| Darkxarth04-12-06, 06:05 PM | Probaly not. But your best chance is a bit of clever roleplaying. Don't ask your DM about a discount on Cloaks of Charisma. Just talk to the merchant/wizard you're buying the Cloaks from. Be nice, ask if there's anything you can do for him/her, ask him/her about his/her family. It might annoy your DM if he/she isn't in to roleplaying or isn't good at coming up with info on the spot. But, most likely, you will be able to convince the merchant/wizard to give you at least a small discount. |
| OravennasBrother04-12-06, 06:56 PM | Bulk discounts don't generally apply to the purchase of a handful of items. Particularly in a setting without assembly lines of automated production. Magic items are by default (ie RAW) made one at a time by a highly skilled craftsman (Mid to High level Spellcaster with appropiate feat) with a great investment of personal effort (XP cost to create). If you could manage an intrigue where some hapless merchant acquired the Cloaks and hten managed to create a slump in demand such that he could not sell the cloaks then you MIGHT be able to drop the price you pay - but a lot of characters (Paladin) would see this as unscrupulous. Really how much do you think you can save? |
| mvincent04-12-06, 07:06 PM | You could maybe target foes that already possess cloaks of charisma and keep the loot instead of selling it at 1/2 price. (The Frost Giant Jarl (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/giant.htm) listing has one, if that helps ; ) |
| JadeSpider964304-12-06, 09:54 PM | Making more and more cloaks won't reduce the production costs. The only reason merchants give a discount on bulk sales is to encourage more sales, giving up a bit of per-unit profit in exchange for selling more units. I really wouldn't expect a bulk discount for less than a dozen. your really better off just trying to get some sort of frequent/favorite/good customer discount. but the idea of asking for sub-quests for in-store credit isn't too bad. |
| tierieanas05-08-06, 05:37 PM | why don't you have the artificer build you some cloaks? it's already half gp, and with his reserve points, he should be able to make them without spending a lot of xp. Also look into the Artisan feats in the Eberron book for further deductions (one takes 25% of the gold cost!). Instead of selling some of your magical items from loot, the artificer can suck some xp from them to make new items. You really shouldn't need a discount from a merchant, just down time for the artificer to make the items. |
| dragonseth05-08-06, 05:54 PM | You have an ARTIFICER, and you want to BUY items??? When I make Artificers, every feat they have is Item Creation. Except for one. Item Familiar for 10% XP boost. Needless to say, we are buying most of our equipment for: 50% x 75% =37.5% of the cost. It's a LOT cheaper, and with a high UMD, he can easily emulate the spells and stuff. |
