I asked a similiar question in another thread, but didn't get an answer, so I'll ask a simpler question instead. To bull rush someone, you must "move into the same square as your opponent" to initiate the bull rush. My question is this, if you are Large and take up a 10x10 square and you bull rush someone who is also Large (taking up a 10x10 square themselves) must you occupy the exact same 10x10 square when initiating the bull rush, or can you overlap just one (or two) of the four squares you occupy with just one (or two) of the four squares your opponent occupies?

I hope this is clear. Any help appreciated.

When you start bullrushing an opponent you take up the same space until your done moving them, then you must both occupy your own space. If you can't end the bullrush in a legal space you're pushed back into the space you were in before entering your opponents.
EDIT
If it is occupied you fall prone in that space. This only happens if you lose the Strength check to begin with and end up in an occupied space.

I understand what you're getting at. It doesn't make a ton of sense for at 10' space creature to enter the same 10' space of the other creature when you're only going to be pushing them in 5' increments. If you then fail the attempt, the rules state that you would move back 5'. If that space is occupied (it will be since you moved 10' to enter his space) you fall prone. Doesn't sound very fair.

I think the intention is that you move 5' straight into the opponent's space, just like you move 5' straight back when you fail. I have to admit that the last part of the rule is rather odd. I mean, it seams unlikely that the space you just left to attempt a bull rush would somehow become occupied during your action. I mean, I can see how it could happen with a readied action or something, I guess.

I don't think it ever address's the issues, but as moving to overlap 5" is still moving into they're square (not completely, but it is in.), it is, IMHO, sufficient to begin a bullrush. I'm not entirely sure how this becomes an issue, other then if moving into the first 5' of your opponents square puts you at the limit of your charge

I agree with Kratch.

You don't have to be grappling the guy, just in the space space.

Overlapping should be enough.

That is my take on it too, especially the more I looked into it. Thanks for the input.
