When would you ever use a bull rush?

Off a cliff, or to clear the way for the reckless charging Caviler to super duper X5 charge an enemy mage, by moving the battlefeild control enemy fighter out of reach.

Yeah if you're a fighter with bull rush you're a fullback. The bull rush most of the time isn't the main attack. It's just setting up the main attack.

Either you bull rush the opposing front line aside so you ccan get to the squishies next turn, or you bull rush them aside so you're other fighter can get to the squishies now.

You can also bull rush enemies away from your party's casters and archers.

Plus, two tactical feats in Complete Warrior make Bull Rush even better. One lets you get a +1 to hit and damage for each square you rush 'em, and the other lets you direct them while pushing them, and if you knock two people into each other you get free trip attempts.

Overall, I love Bull Rush, it makes playing a fighter or barbarian so much more interesting, especially if the DM actually includes some slightly interesting terrain.

It's also good for pushing squishies into a corner so they can't 5-ft step and cast/shoot or withdraw and get away.

Casters/archers are usually the best targets since they will typically lack str (making it easier) and won't be wielding a melee weapon to AoO you with.

It's also fun to Bullrush someone through a line of your best melee mashers, so they all get AoOs (though that % chance to hit you makes this a bit chancey).

Its also good for pushing orcs into the river of lava that flows under the bridge of the elders.

Some of the most effective primary spellcasters in the game use "battlefield control" tactics and modus operandi when choosing and casting their spells.

A "BC" spellcaster gets great synergy with a bullrush melee combatant specialist. The bullrusher can push enemies into their wizard-friend's hazard spells like Web, EBT, Acid Fog, Grease, Wall of Fire, etc.

That way you can complicate your foe's movement, vision, time-of-usefulness, etc. ... while many times being able to also adminster damage to them.

I once shoved an opponent between a pair of rogues so they could open a nice can of Sneak Attack whoopaft. :)

You can push enemies into fire, brambles, razorvine, the Pit of Sarlac, etc.

Save you allies from being flanked.

Single out an opponent for the artillery.

Break shield walls or phalanxes.

My lvl 1 Ranger's first kill was hobgoblin + 100ft cliff +Bullrush.

oh, the carnage. :D

Died trying to drag the cleric to safety later though. Bled out on the steps of the keep. :weep:

Most common use in standard dungeon crawl is to force your way in on the very frequent door jam gridlock battle.

Second is the AoO "line up boys" cheese.

You can also Bull rush the low fort save BBEG wizard into a prismatic wall.

Aside from when parties work together, the base Bullrush ability is hardly used in my games because it is up to the DM when it is useful. If I have the players fight around cliffs, then bullrush sees use, but the cliff is an unfair advantage in that situation (it would suck for a PC to be pushed over it, and that would make the encounter a much higher CR for the PCs).

In my games, I'm currently testing an expansion on Bullrush. The initial idea is that Bullrush and Knockback should be the same maneuver; it doesn't take a whole lot of practice to be able to kick a ball or bat a ball does it? So, bullrush can be used as a Knockback or a Push (push is unarmed), and the foe moves any distance up to a number of feat you beat their strength check by; if you follow, you'll get some sort of bonus to your strength check.

The knockback allows you to knock someone away with a weapon attack; a push is still easier because the knockback will be weapon damage vs. strength check (though 2d6+1.5 str can beat 1d20+str on average with a 26 str, or good weapon enhancements).

But I hadn't really thought of cheesing out AoOs with Bullrushes.

There's a nice maneuver in tome of battle that lets you do a bullrush, and if you move them, they take damage, and if you move them farther than 5 feet, you don't have to follow, they just get bounced there. :D coolness with a capital "GET THE HE** OUT OF MY WAY!";)

One of my favorite applications is knocking someone into a corner so the the spellpike (the longsword is a disgustingly cliche weapon) could shocking grasp/stab it to death.

I've never had a player take feats in Bull Rush, but I have seen the following in the last 8 years with the current group (yes, 2e and 3e):

1) Knock a mindless opponent away from a felled comrade (to prevent the follow-up attack and kill on the negative hp ally).
2) knock a foe in between two rogues
3) Knock a foe around a corner in a dungeon, adding him to the allied lightning bolt carnage
4) foe was immune to the party's weapons, bull rushed into a cabinet and locked in.
5) knock undead through a wall of fire
6) grab the attention of low intelligence foes (like animals), despite the greater pain being inflicted by another ally.

Its a key part of your arsenal, and a loss of a way to forcefully move your opponent would be terrible indeed.

last week i was fighting an adult white dragon in its icy lair near a big effing river.

it bull rushed me, and i slid down the ice into the almost frozen river. if i didnt have protection from energy up i wouldve froze easily. it took a bit concentration check and a spider climb spell to get out too!

in short... bull rush almost killed my Duskblade.

Step 1. Cast prismatic wall behind non-STR based enemy. Step 2. Cast quickened grease and and something like Battering Ram or Telekinesis. Insta death.

One of the guys in my party Bullrushed several rounds in a row and stepped on ( yes, he stepped on them, there by trampling them) 96 Kobalds. I see bullrush as a good kobald pudding maker now
