| fullmetal8011005-08-06, 12:59 PM | I noticed that you can purchase a lesser nightmare out of the planar handbook as a mount. I wanted to know if you can buy a full on nightmare as a mount. If so where is the purchase amount. Thanks in advance |
| fullmetal8011005-08-06, 01:15 PM | I have to have my character done in a week and I thought of this cool idea so I am trying to work it all out, unfortuneatly I don't have a way to contact my dm with the question unless he is at the hobby shop. And the issue of the town having enough resources isn't a problem, we are working for some wizards of Thay and Blackguards right now, if anyone will have them. If you were the DM what would you make them cost??? |

If you were the DM what would you make them cost??? If I was DM in that situation. Thayen Blackguards would charge you out the nose for one of their precious Nightmares; also because they are just greedy, snipish little pricks. I'd say an exoberent amount of cash; but that's not the issue here - Even Lesser Nightmares are quite a formidable ally and you will HAVE to talk with your DM over it, he may not let you have one, even if you can afford it. So you minds well finish everythign else, because the only way you cna NORMALLY get a Nightmare as a mount is to take the Leadership feat, become a Blackguard or Fallen paldin and summon one as your Mount, or be a certian kind of Demon. Other then that, usually you're pretty SOL. |
| fullmetal8011005-08-06, 02:06 PM | Our game has started to completly tilt towards evil so having a lesser nightmare wouldn't ba a problem, a less nightmare will become usless at level 8 or 9, there speed is only 40 ft and in combat there saves are makable on the die roll alone. Can you think of any other really cool (non good) mounts? |

| fullmetal8011005-08-06, 02:35 PM | I want to have a nightmare in the only evil camaign I am going to be in for awhile, if you arn't going to help me figure out the problem than why are you posting here? |
| Necropolitan05-08-06, 03:02 PM | I want to have a nightmare in the only evil camaign I am going to be in for awhile, if you arn't going to help me figure out the problem than why are you posting here? The Problem is, no DM in their right mind will just GIVE you a Nightmare, even if you pay him 1.4 million GP; Seriously, you're better off with the Mean-tempered Warhorse idea. Then again, you don't seem to have that firm a grasp of the game; Since you want to play a ranged character, but can't pick a race, and think ranged characters suck compared to melee characters, because they can't use power attack. Maybe you should sit down with the SRD for a few hours and get a firmer grasp of gameplay options before you go tailyho into trying ot somehow shanghai your DM into giving you a creature who's normally a high-level Cohort as a mount. |
| fullmetal8011005-08-06, 04:03 PM | I never said range was worse than melee, I far prefer range. But it is easier to get more damage in melee. And in the post about the race I am looking for, well I am trying to find something that will compliment the character concept. Also a nightmare shouldn't go anywhere near 1 million gp, it should be expensive but not at that level. You are the one who isn't understanding what I am trying to say, also earlier I asked you to stop posting if you wern't going to help my situation out. So either shut up or help me out, I am not trying to get a Nightmare for free, I am trying to find a price for one. In DnD you can buy anything, some things are just more costly than others. |
| mvincent05-08-06, 05:20 PM | I wanted to know if you can buy a full on nightmare as a mount. If so where is the purchase amount.Unfortunately, this is not covered in the rules, nor are there commonly excepted guidelines. The Arms and Equipment guide does have some information on exotic mounts, and the DMG contains CR guidelines for what the most powerful type of mount one should be allowed at each level. At worst, you could simply pay someone to cast "polymorph any object (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/polymorphAnyObject.htm)" (1360 gp) on a standard warhorse or somesuch to turn it into a nightmare. |
| fullmetal8011005-09-06, 04:57 AM | Well I am an evil character, so what if I offered the good characters in the party as a sacrifice to whatever diety they are worshiping? I don't think the players would mind, they are going to a good cause. |
| Mitchell05-09-06, 05:00 AM | In theory, if you go far enough afield, anything can be bought for the right price. There isn't a price for everything. Talk to your DM. Come up with a plan "A" and plan "B" if you want to, but we cannot tell you how much your DM will want to charge for a nightmare, nor can we tell you if they will allow you to have one. How much would I charge?. Are you sure you want me to answer this? More. As in, more than you have. If you are concerned about a lesser nightmare becoming useless at level 8 or 9, it tells me that you aren't that level yet, and you're wanting to purchase a highly intelligent 15hd monster that is considered a challenge to a party of four 11th level characters. Please. Why not just try to buy an ancient red wyrm? |
| Nadaka05-09-06, 08:12 AM | Your best bet is to take the leadership feat and ask your DM for a nightmare as a your cohort. On the down side, you have to share treasure and xp with it. On the plus side it shouldn't cost you anything right away and will not betray (without you abusing it) you like a highly intelligent & evil slave nightmare that you simply bought would. |
| mvincent05-09-06, 08:17 PM | you have to share treasure and xp with it.You actually don't need to share either with a cohort. |
| Balor von Balorvitch05-09-06, 08:28 PM | I think Night Hags deal with nightmares, although if you can't take a night hag.... I say go for a fendish heavy warhorse, unless you want to fly. |

| Nadaka05-09-06, 09:45 PM | You actually don't need to share either with a cohort. According to my 3.0 & 3.5 DMG you do. 3.0DMG p 46 & 3.5DMG p 106: "A cohort is effectively another PC in the party under the players control, one whose share of XP, treasure, and spotlight time is bound to take something away from the other players." |

The current rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#leadership) are: "Cohorts earn XP as follows: The cohort does not count as a party member when determining the party’s XP. Divide the cohort’s level by the level of the PC with whom he or she is associated (the character with the Leadership feat who attracted the cohort). Multiply this result by the total XP awarded to the PC and add that number of experience points to the cohort’s total. " |

Consider for a moment that leadership is a feat that can increase ones effective power by ~50% to ~120% (depending on synergy). As written in the SRD it is fantastically unbalanced. The only thing balancing it in the RAW (on paper) is that it costs both XP and wealth over time. Even though though its balancing factor is not specifically defined, it is at least something to work with. |
| SolenVlos05-10-06, 09:06 AM | make a chessy woundrous item that summons a Phantom steed 2 or 3 times a day, at caster level 14. you will be incredible fast. more even if you use a run action. you can cross continents in hours with this. |
