Buying some armor... can anyone improve on this? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Darkleaf Chain Shirt (+4 AC, max dex +6, -0 armor check) 850 gp
Darkwood Dastana (+1 AC, no max dex modifier, -0 armor check) 75 gp
Darkwood Buckler (+1 AC, no max dex modifier, -0 armor check) 205 gp

Total modifiers: +6 AC, max dex +6, -0 armor check

total cost: 1130

I have a total of 1500 gp to my name right now, and I'd like to try to keep a couple hundred after buying armor. I also have an Amulet of Natural Armor +1 (can be sold for 1000 gp.)

If anyone can come up with a way to get a better AC with the available money, or a better deal to achieve similar results, LMK. I'd like to keep my armor check penalty at 0 if at all possible.

The Red Shirt Solution

10gp = 100sp / 2sp (cost of foot mercenary per day) = 50 mercenaries

Hire mercenaries who own crossbows and for 10 gp you have constant total cover, long-range trap detection, greatly increased carrying capacity, and 50d8 ranged damage power.

Beat that.

Mercenaries require extra hazard pay if you are doing anything really dangerous (like fighting a dragon, exploring a trap-filled dungeon).

That is only if you have genuine concern for them. :)

Is it really your fault if the "Kobold Cave" turns out to be a dragon-infested death trap?

P.S. Your PC named it "Kobold Cave" 5 minutes prior to hiring said mercenaries.

Doesn't "Darkleaf" only work for non-metal armor which means no to the Chain Shirt?

I don't recall where a Darkwood Dastana would come from but some DMs may frown upon haphazard use of armor add-ons. Even if allowed it seems far too cheap for its benefits; I mean it costs less than the core Darkwood Buckler while providing the same AC benefit in what appears to be a slotless item that stacks with other armor. Something is definitely wrong with this piece.

Wouldn't a Darkwood Large Shield also have an ACP of 0 but provide a +2 AC.

Got it backwards. Only armor normally made of metal can be darkleaf.

Dastana are from Arms and Equipment Guide, as is the Darkwood material. Dastana can only be used with leather, padded leather, and chain shirt armors, so it's not game-breaking. They also use the bracers slot, so no Bracers of Armor while wearing them.

Using a heavy shield would in fact give an extra +1 AC and only costs me an extra 52 gp. Nice catch there.

Dastana are pretty game breaking if you rule that you can enchant them separately from the armor. Then you get things like chain shirt +5 and dastana +5 for a total ac bonus of +15. Otherwise they seem ok.

If weight isn't an issue, go Mwk on the Buckler, it'll be cheaper.
