Hi everybody,

I am complete newbie at DnD. How do you calculate the attack bonus on weapons, or is the stat given? I have the 3 core rulebooks but I havn't been able to find (or understand) where the attack bonus comes from.

For Melee Attacks
Attack Bonus = Character's Base Attack Bonus (as listed on the chart for each class) + Character's Strength Modifier

For Ranged Attacks
Attack Bonus = Character's Base Attack Bonus (as listed on the chart for each class) + Character's Dexterity Modifier

Once magic weapons and spells get involved it looks like this:
Attack Bonus = Character's Base Attack Bonus + Character's Strength (or Dexterity if ranged) Modifier + Weapon's Enhancement Bonus (A +1 Longsword has an Enhancement Bonus of +1) + Misc Modifiers (If a Cleric casts Bless youget +1 to your attack rolls)

minor additional note: some feats can change these slightly.

For instance, Weapon Focus grants an additional +1 bonus to your attack rolls with that specific weapon, and Weapon Finess allows you to use Dex instead of Strength for your attack rolls in melee with light weapons.
