| kleberelf12-10-05, 03:09 PM | Okay in Defenders of the faith pg 23 is the ( +1 ) ability named "CALLED" that can be added to armor and shields. IT states in the reading that the owner can utter a command word and call the armor or shield to her as a standard action. Armor appears correctly donned at the end of that standard action, or a shield appears on the proper arm. My questions are: 1. Has this Magic effect been duplicated or updated in any more recent books published by wizards? 2. What do you folks responding think the max. calling distance would be? Theoretically I would like to have my armor in say an Inn room and should a brawl break out, hollar "by the powers of greyskull" and boom my armor is on me....lol... My ideas are that is sorta like a wear it for XX long thing and as long as you are on the same plane you can call it to you. 3. Once called do you think this item would have the ability to de-summon the armor back to where it was originally summoned forth from? Any ideas on the above questions Community??? |
| Lucent12-10-05, 03:35 PM | Far as I know called hasn't been replaced in any 3.5 product. It's one of my favorite armor enhancements too due to its unique ability. Now, Called armor is a teleportation subschool effect. I don't have Defenders of the Faith anymore, so I can't tell you exactly what spell was used to make it. I'm guessing word of recall, since it was in a divine caster book. If that is the case, then you can clearly understand its limitations by examining the spell "word of recall" for distance and qualities and then use the caster level of the item (listed at the bottom of the item's entry) to determine any level-based variants. I would hazard to guess that if Word of Recall does not cut through planar boundaries then neither can your armor. It would also likewise be limited in distance by the powers of the spell that made it. Other than that, you're good. Just don't try and call your armor in a dimension locked room ;D  Lucent |
| kleberelf12-10-05, 07:44 PM | Thanks Lucent for the post/input. In making the "CALLED" effect to your armor or shield it states it requires craft magic arms & armor and Teleport. Any more ideas to answer the three questions i have I would gladly hear what you folks have to say! |

I personally believe it should be a straight addition to cost (like shadow) instead of a +1 cost. I'd use +2000 gp as a starting figure to test. Since Calling is part of the armor's enchantments I'd expect you to actually have to touch the armor for it to work. Removal of the armor would work in a similiar way. I certainly would NOT let it work away from Line of Sight. Finally, screaming the command word to don the armor in the middle of a crowded bar is a STUPID idea. Just think, after your done fighting and have retired for the night some drunk patron is recounting events and how the warrior yeld SHAZAM and was fully armored only it is now the drunk who is wearing your fancy suit of armor. |
| Edymnion12-10-05, 10:43 PM | Oh come on, its cool! Power of Grayskul, Its Morphing Time, Moon Prism Power, there's lots of shows that use command words to change clothes into battle mode. Nothing wrong with having a D&D character that does the same thing. |
| kleberelf12-11-05, 12:27 PM | Thanks for the replies... IF those responding can answer the questions i had that would be kick you know what!... Also I used "By the power of greyskull" as a joke.... As per the reading it says when the "OWNER" states the command word it is summoned equipped on the PC.... Thus, by the RAW no "drunk" overhearing me yell the command word in a wild battle yell phrase could summon my armor. He is NOT the owner. |
| _Magius12-11-05, 12:31 PM | There's a Psion/Wilder power that allows for a similar effect.... |
| kleberelf12-11-05, 12:34 PM | Bump for more ideas. |
| InkBlot12-11-05, 01:57 PM | 1. Has this Magic effect been duplicated or updated in any more recent books published by wizards? The closest thing I can think of is a self-assembling set of full plate that a friend's cleric got as a reward from a silver dragon in a (relatively) recent campaign. It was made out of various little holy-symbols and while disassembled was stored in a shoe-box-sized box. Assembling or disassembling was a full-round-action if memory serves correct. Unfortunately I never got to look at the stats and that friend has since moved away. I'll have to ask the DM of that game later how he came up with that armor. There is also the Psychic Warrior power Call Armor (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040827e). However that can't call a specific shield or set of armor, just a random set of armor or shield of a the type and (if you augment the power) enhancement bonus you specify. Call Armor: Call Armor Psychoportation (Teleportation) Level: Psychic warrior 1 Display: Material Manifesting Time: 1 round Range: 0 ft. Effect: 1 armor/shield; see text Duration: 1 min./level; see text (D) Saving Throw: None Power Resistance: No Power Points: 1 You call a piece of armor or a shield "from thin air" to you. (Actually, it is a real item hailing from some other random location in the space and time.) You don't have to see or know of the item to call it -- in fact, you can't ever call a specific item; you just specify the kind (chain shirt, full plate, buckler, or some other). The item is made of ordinary materials appropriate for its kind. Armor appears correctly donned and shields appear on the proper arm. If the armor is ever off your body or you relinquish your grip on the shield you called for 2 or more consecutive rounds, it automatically returns to wherever it originated. (For this purpose, you're considered to be wearing armor when you're donning or shedding it.) Armor and shields gained by call armor are distinctive due to their astral glimmer. Augment: For every 4 additional power points you spend, this power improves the item's enhancement bonus to Armor Class by 1. For example, if you spend 13 power points, you call a shield or piece of armor with a +3 enhancement bonus to Armor Class. If it's based off of teleport then I would say 900 miles, and not across planar boundries. Teleport is 100 miles/caster level and 9th level is the minimum caster level. Although this would mean you can't call it out of a closed Bag of Holding, so invest in a beast of burden (dwarven or warforged barbarians work well). 3. Once called do you think this item would have the ability to de-summon the armor back to where it was originally summoned forth from? That would be very cool, and I think if unsummoning it were a full-round-action that it wouldn't be unbalancing. Just so long as you can't easily unsummon and resummon in the middle of a battle so as to gain all the AC of fullplate and none of the armor check penalty. |
