mystraca 09-28-05, 01:55 PM	I can't seem to find it in my source books-- wasn't there rules for letting you target a foe's arms, legs ect? I was trying to think of what kind of role my party will need to make to steak a Vampire
d_nychus 09-28-05, 01:57 PM	Not in this edition. It rather defeats the point of having hit points if you can target a creature's neck to chop its head off. There are a few creatures that allow for sundering of limbs or heads (like the kraken and the hydra), but those are special cases that apply to those creatures only. To stake a vampire, the PCs first need to render it helpless, normally by damaging it until it retreats to it's coffin and has to spend time rejuvenating.
mystraca 09-28-05, 02:06 PM	any suggestions for the attack roll to use a wooden stake through the heart then? it makes sense for it to need to be helpless (like when in it's coffin after hiting 0 or less hp)and making a coup de gras attack but an undead creature is immune to such attacks ( critical hits).
Spike_Fightwicky 09-28-05, 02:23 PM	I'd say that using a wooden stake to perform a coup de grace on a vampire would be the equivalent of "staking" it (as shown in the list of vampire weaknesses) without having to go through the whole crit thing.
Rulebook 09-28-05, 05:08 PM	theres a book my group sometimes uses called Torn Asunder: Critical Hits. its a pretty good book that covers called shots and critical hits, and of varying degrees. just be careful, if you start doing them, so do your enemies. yes, thats right, they can hit you with the same uber powered debilitating strikes that you so covet as a one-sided edge. but the book DOES have the marksman class in it, which is just a freaking WILD prc (i mention it all the time, if nothing else for the 17-20 x7 scythes, or the like 8-20 x5 rapiers and such)

Gray stranger 09-28-05, 05:23 PM	To Steak a vampire Here it is: Vampire Steak Ingredients 1 Vampire body, dead, not Undead 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1/2 cup flour 3 tbs. margarine 2 onions, sliced 1 cup water 1 clove garlic, minced 1 bay leaf 2 tbs. parsley, finely chopped Preparation Cut Body into steak. Combine salt, pepper, & flour. Coat steak strips with flour mixture. Pound flour into meat. Place margarine in heavy skillet, add sliced onion & minced garlic. Cook until tender. Remove & set aside. Add a little more margarine to skillet & brown meat on both sides over medium heat. Add water, bay leaf, & parsley. Place saut onions on top of steak. Cover tightly, cooking slowly for 1-1 1/2 hours or until meat is tender. More water may be added if necessary. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Yeah, I know this is lame ;) :D

Considering that staking a vampire in its coffin is the standard situation and they are helpless while doing that, and that in general, such careful and precise damage is a Coup de Grace, pinning isn't enough, because they are not helpless. Halt Undead (Sor/Wiz 3) is the easiest way to get a vampire helpless, since they are immune to most other paralysis effects as undead. And since they go gaseous when at 0hp and don't sleep, they won't be unconscious very much. Unless of course, you can tie up or crush him under a large rock first...which raises the question- why not just cut off its head?
