With the former your normal weapon damage is replaced by your Con check so the actual weapon might be irrelavent. I'm also on the fence when it comes to what happens when you attack something with DR using Insightful Strike. The maneuver itself mentions nothing about overcoming DR, does this mean that I still need a +1 weapon to overcome let's say DR5/Magic? Insightful Strike says that str modifier, weapon's magic properties or any other extra damage does not modify the check. The Mountain Hammer line seems similar to the sneak attack mechanics so I can see it being subdual damage if delivered with an unarmed strike (just like sneak attack damage can be subdual if performed with a sap). |

The weapon is still otherwise its normal self for the purposes of what kind of damage it deals and whether it bypasses DR. So yes, you'd still need a +1 or better weapon to bypass DR 5/Magic when using Insightful Strike, and an unarmed Mountain Hammer just means that you've landed a really devastating (and defense-penetrating) nonlethal punch when you use it with an ordinary unarmed strike. (You'd still draw an AoO too, if you didn't have IUS.) |
