| Lord Nap11-20-06, 03:02 PM | Last night we had a ranger that wanted to use his dodge feat to avoid the attack of an orc archer as he was riding toward him. I didn't know the rule, and just had him make a successful "ride" check at DC 10 to see if he could use the dodge feat while on horseback. Anyone know the official ruling on this? |
| DM Zoc11-20-06, 03:10 PM | I'm fairly certain that you can use that feat mounted, yes. |
| ShinAkuma211-20-06, 03:23 PM | Ask yourself: Is there any reason he couldn't use the feat? As there is not, we reach one conclusion: He can use the feat. |
| Lord Nap11-20-06, 03:46 PM | Ask yourself: Is there any reason he couldn't use the feat? As there is not, we reach one conclusion: He can use the feat. I guess that's why I was uncertain. Since he was on horseback, I thought that maybe he was restricted in his movement - the ability to actually dodge (since the feat applies to the character, not the mount). Unless it's specifically mentioned in the rules, I'll just allow him to use dodge while mounted. |
| draconic_swine11-20-06, 03:53 PM | From the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm#dodgeBonus): Dodge Bonus A dodge bonus improves Armor Class (and sometimes Reflex saves) resulting from physical skill at avoiding blows and other ill effects. Dodge bonuses are never granted by spells or magic items. Any situation or effect (except wearing armor) that negates a character's Dexterity bonus also negates any dodge bonuses the character may have. Dodge bonuses stack with all other bonuses to AC, even other dodge bonuses. Dodge bonuses apply against touch attacks. Since riding a mount doesn't negate a PC's Dexterity bonus, they retain the doge bonus while mounted. If you're trying to imagine/describe somebody mounted using dodge, don't forget that even while sitting you're able to lean from side to side, press yourself flat against the horse, and so on. |
