Can a Rogue use a Composite Shortbow? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-25-06, 02:30 PM I was just looking at the weapons lists for rogues, can they use the composite version or are they limited to just the normal shortbows?

05-25-06, 02:35 PM IIRC, composite shortbows are considered shortbows for purposes of weapon proficiencies and other feats that enhance shortbows.

05-25-06, 05:21 PM I don't see anything about Composite and normal bows being the same. However the Elf racial proficiency with Bows specifically includes Composite versions, while the Rogue does not. Based on that I would rule that the Rogue is not proficient with a composite Short Bow.

I never would have guessed anyone could react so well to my being a jerk. :) Of course, I wasn't being the horrible person I can be at times.
The PHB expressly says that a composite bow is the equivalent of a shortbow for proficiency purposes. read the description in the equipment section.

Now, I may just be thinking about this a little too hard, but when a question arises on the subject of a weapon, you look at the weapon's description to make a ruling, not at races and classes.

I think that if you look in a place that could be deemed relevant, such as the last paragraph of the Shortbow, Composite entry on page 121 of the PHB, you will find a more accurate answer.
