Can Damage Reduction be bought? [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-31-06, 10:16 AM I'm playing a dervish character level 9 and I was wondering if there were any items that you can buy that give DR. Because I wanted to wield two scimitars with vicious on them. Another little question, can you have multiple of the same enhancement like vicious twice for +4d6 and ill take 2d6 of damage? Finally, are there any other scimitars that are better than the one in the players. If so which book would I look into or what are the stats for the weapon? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

07-31-06, 10:19 AM 1) Sure - just buy armor made of Adamantine (http://d20srd.org/srd/specialMaterials.htm#adamantine)

2) Most people will say "No", some will say "Yes".

3) I always recommend the "make your own" approach - find the best enchantments that work for your character build.

07-31-06, 10:31 AM It should be said though that the damage you get from a vicious weapon is energy damage and therefore ignores damage reduction.

07-31-06, 10:41 AM I don't think that a weapon can have the same quality twice. Vicious might not be the best, as you'll quickly run yourself down - bane, flaming, holy, merciful, etc. in conjunction are good for sending the bonus damage through the roof.

As Dalthbar suggested, adamantine armor gives you minor DR. Since the dervish does best in light armor, this means an adamantine chain shirt, which gives you a DR on 1/-. You could get a piece of armor with the invulnerability quality, which gives you a DR of 5/magic (largely useless at higher levels, but very expensive). In any case, the DR will do nothing whatsoever to prevent the damage you take from wielding a weapon with the vicious quality.

A scimitar is a scimitar - with slashing blades, you don't get to treat similar weapons as scimitars and treat them as light weapons.

07-31-06, 10:51 AM Thanks for the post. That helps alot. About the scimitar though, I wasnt sure if there was like a (insert race here) scimitar that did more damage or a better crit range. but again thanks for the post.

07-31-06, 11:22 AM All of these are from my imperfect recollection:
Thinaum from Races of the Wild gives 3/piercing, Somethingsilk shirt from Races of Stone gives 1/piercing, and axeblock, hammerblock, and spearblock all come from Complete Warrior. I think Sandstorm has a greater scimitar.

Not sure if I know where you are going with this, but the Slashing Blades ability Dervish have only work on the PHB Scimitar by name. If you do happen to find the Happy Scimitar, Great Scimitar, Power Scimitar, or whatever more powerful (stat wise) scimitar than the PHB one, you wouldn't get the benefit of the Dervish Slashin Blades ability.

If I miss understood and you are not looking for a better weapon to somehow use with the Slashing Blades ability of the Dervish, then ignore me.
