Can I stack these items [Archive] - Wizards Community

I may want to put gloves of dexterity on a character, while I understand that I couldn't stack two wondrous items (like wearing the gauntlets of ogre power over top of them), I'd like to have him wear a put a +5 gauntlet of spellstoring on his right hand and a locking gauntlet over top of the other. It seems better than paying an extra 50% for creating gauntlets of dexterity. Is this allowed?

Also, with a spellstoring weapon, could you release the spell through a successful touch attack?

In my games, a gauntlet can and should be worn with gloves under it. This is to prevent itching and other skin irritations.

Of course, DnD with its crazy rules, says you can't benefit from gauntlets and gloves at the same time.

You can wear gloves on gauntlets over one another, however you will only get one effect. The thinking behind this is that one enhancement will cover-up, over-power, or interfere with the other.

Hope that helps a bit.

Yeah, the locking gauntlet is fine over the gloves, even by the RAW, but two enchantments going on in one place "ist verboten". The above explanation makes it seem pseudo-logical, but when you realize that you can wear gloves and two rings, it's harder to see things this way. Basically, it's a game balance issue. It's a limitation imposed on you to keep things under control, magic-wise. You can always pay the extra to get either of the enchantments on a different kind of item than the original (say an amulet of dexterity or a belt of spell-storing).

Actually, and Im not saying this is correct, but I think it is a legitimate argument to say that a +5 gauntlet doesnt fill up a slot because it is a weapon. From that perspective the +5 gauntlet is like a sword. You can wear magic gloves and wield a sword at the same time. There are no "slot issues" there. So, wielding a gauntlet (even though it is fitted over the hand) is by analogy with the sword or any other weapon, ok. You have to define the gauntlet as a weapon, which is an un-slotted magic item.

Of course, there is no way you could get two enhancement bonuses, like dex and str from Gloves of Dexterity and Gauntlets of Strength.

I dont think there is a balance issue in allowing this either, since, like I said, you can already wear magic gloves and wield any other weapon besides gauntlets. The only advantage that gauntlets, spiked or otherwise, have over any other weapon is that they make the weilder more difficult to disarm, but that isnt, at least from my perspective, that big a deal.

This is a good point. If it was just a +5 weapon, I'd probably allow it, the same way I'd allow the locking gauntlet. The spell-storing was really the issue for me. I guess the RAW are actually a bit less clear about this than I had first thought, since as you say the gauntlet in this case is more a weapon than an item taking up a slot. I can't say the rules explicitly forbid it, the way they'd forbid dex gloves and strength gauntlets, but as DM I'd forbid the spell-storing and allow the +5 on its own. Probably a DM-specific issue here.

You should know that I am in a minority position on that one, it is a small minority I believe. I think it is just me. Even saying it as a hypothetical made me feel like Id doused myself in gas. But, a weapon is a weapon.

The RAW may not support this, but if that's the case I suspect it's one of oversight rather than intent.

If the gauntlet is a weapon, you should also be able to use your glove slot seperately, since despite the name the gauntlet would be in your "weapon slot".

I believe you should ask your DM. I personally feel that weapons do not take up a slot (i.e. you can also stack enchanted armor spikes on top of enchanted armor), but YDMMMV.

I always have a visual image of myself pushing my glasses back up the bridge of my nose with an index finger while working on a slide rule when I ask things like this.

I think that if you were wearing gloves of dexterity and you put metal guantlets on, the gloves are negated by the fact that your hands can only make fists around the handle of a sword, axe or tree trunk now, because they are encased in steel.

I don't see a weapon as taking the same slot as gloves, since you can disarm the sword, and it can move around from hand to hand. You can also drop the sword. It is not part of your clothing.

But mainly it is a game balance issue for those that would choose to walk around with a dozen silk gloves on , 14 rings and five sets of mithril chainmail.

Just level up.. and get some skils. ;)

glennhefley: There's no game balance issue here, and certainly no Rules contradiction. The gauntlets are not a "Slot" item. They are not Wonderous Items. They are weapons and tools, respectively, for a Gauntlet of Spellstoring and a Locked Gauntlet.

No you you can't have Goves of Dexterity and Gloves of Storing. No you can't have Gloves of Dexterity and Gauntlets of Ogre Power. And I'll be the first to say you can't have Regular Gauntlets AND Guantlets of Ogre Power... But Gloves of Dexterity and regular gauntlets, whether enchanted(as WEAPONS, or even as part of a suit of magical armour) or not are perfectly fine. This is a personal assertion, mind you, I have no specific example to back up my opinion on... only my interpretation of the RAW.

If someone, anyone, can point out a specific answer from anywhere, feel free to contradict me.
