I am trying to make a flaming sword. But I want to specialize in only that. I can put the +1 property to add 1d6 fire dmg to the weapon. I want to charge it as a +5 to make it do 5d6 fire damage. The DM says it is broken so I cannot do this. But he will allow me to charge each of the other property's such as 1d6 acid 1d6 cold and 1d6 electric with it. Does anyone else see the reasoning behind this.

It's a game mechanic/balance thing.
If your in a "cold" campaign it would be much better to be able to have the
5d6 fire damage, then 1d6 fire, 1d6 acid etc...

Once you go to +2 it becomes a Flaming Burst weapon, and w/o a houserule that's as far as it can progress along the "fire" line.

Them's the rules.

It also makes it easier for the DM to throw creatures vulnerable to fire at your party without you killing them immediately.

Honestly, it is not very overpowered to allow a +5 cost for a 5d6 of fire damage, upon command.

But it is up to your DM and it looks like he has already made up his mind.

The best you can do core rules wise is to get:

+1 flaming, frost, shocking weapon.

As one command you activate all three powers, doing +1d6 of fire, +1d6 of cold and +1d6 of electrical.

(Non-core may offer you things like 1d6 acid and 1d6 sonic, but those are not in the core 3.5 books)

It says nowhere that you can't.

PS, Did the title remind anyone else of those YouTube "Will it Blend?" commercials? I was just thinking:

"Will it stack? That is the question."

We are not in any type of campaign like that. We are fighting currently a dragon of each type with a large number of enemies that are varrying in elemental properties. What sense does to make to have a flaming cold acid electric sword. In comparison to a REAL BIG Flaming sword. For role playing reasons it makes more sense. Game mechanics it makes more sense since 9/10 monsters are immune or resistant and not vulnerable to the elements.

The 3.5 FAQ allows for the latter, but allowing the former would mean things like Fiery Blast (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/magicItems/weapons.htm#fieryBlast) would be useless. Plus, 5d6 can get through elemental resistances easier than 1d6 multiple times.

It's been discussed before (at length). There are a couple, non-standard instances of creatures using flaming x3 weapons, but these are exceptions to the rule. Really, if someone were to allow it, then fire resitance should applied to each d6 anyway.

For fun you could always ask your DM what would happen if a flaming arrow, that also had the "fire arrow" spell on it, was fired from a flaming bow. ;)

Yeah, technically you can only have one "Flaming" enhancement, which you could then upgrade to "Flaming Burst". Heck, you could always make your weapon out of Fever Iron ('Magic of Faerun') to get an extra +1 fire damage on every hit.

This would be the "by the book" way to go.

But for players who want a "Fire Sword" and have DM's who don't want multiples of the same enhancement, I came up with this:

Greater Flaming: A Greater Flaming weapon is an upgrade from and functions as a standard Flaming weapon, except the extra fire damage is increased by two damage dice, from d6 to d10. If the weapon is a Flaming Burst weapon, the burst damage is also increased by one damage die, from d10 to d12. Bows, crossbows, and slings so crafted bestow the extra energy damage upon their ammunition.

Strong evocation [fire]; CL 13th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor; fireball or flamestrike; Price +1 Market Bonus (Synergy).

[NOTE: this could work with any "energy" weapon (Frost, Shocking, Corrosive, Sonic), though in the case of Sonic the increase would be from d4 to d8, and Thundering (what I'd call "Sonic Burst" would go from d8 to d10.]

It's pretty much a compromise, for people who want to amp up their fire (or whatever) damage exclusively versus a DM who won't let them use multiples of the same enhancement. It's not as good in normal situations as Flaming x2 (+d10 instead of +2d6), but then it also ramps up the Flaming Burst damage (multiples of +d12 instead of +d10) on criticals, so you're really not loosing anything.

As for whether it's balanced, I think it looks good but others might not. Opinions are welcome.

There are a couple of things - There is a core Acid damage enhancement (called Corrosive, if I remember correctly), as well as a sonic one; however, the sonic only does 1d4.

Back to the OP, there is also the Energy Surge property, which allows you to do extra energy damage with a swift action, as well as the Phoenix Ash Threat crystal, which does some extra fire damage the next round. You also technically could put on the Energy Aura property, which is a +2 bonus which gives 1d6 energy damage of any type (as in, you can pick the energy type from round to round), but that is pretty expensive for only 1d6. These enhancements are from the Magic Item Compendium.

I believe that the most fiery you could get a weapon would be a +1 flaming burst energy surge (fire) energy aura (set to fire) weapon with a greater Phoenix Ash Threat crystal, which all together would do base damage + 2d6 fire (flaming and energy aura) , with an extra 3d6 with a swift action (energy surge), more on a critical hit (burst), and 5 extra damage on the subsequent round (crystal)

Hope that helps.

Well you apply the energy assault crystal, fire to an already flaming sword, the wording is such that it would stack...maybe, and really it’s up to your DM. But this is from memory, so the best I think you can get is 3d6 of one elemental type the first round and 4d6 on each subsequent round(fire only crystal ability), plus the burst ability but it gets expensive. On a +3(minimum for a greater crystal) sword with the elemental ability (+1d6 elemental damage of your choice changeable on your turn) is a +2 enchantment, flaming is +1 so with the burst you’re looking a +7 weapon. Add to that the 6000 for the greater energy assault crystal fire. And you get +3d6 fire in the first round and 4d6 each round after that.

For a solid 3d6 a round it’s much cheaper (thou hardly inexpensive). Base sword is +1, flaming (+1) elemental (+2), and the lesser assault crystal (3000gp). This actually works with any elemental type.

I want to charge it as a +5 to make it do 5d6 fire damage. The DM says it is broken

Tremendous debate on this issue (like once a month) and there is no real answer in RAW.

If your DM interprets that you can't, then you can't since he has ample room in RAW to interpret it that way.
