Could one not make a double or triple flask's worth of the stuff and simply toss a larger "bomb" of it? Now, I'm not talking about creating a gigantic barrel's-worth of the stuff and tossing it at people... but I could see a double or triple "dose" of the stuff still being easy-enough to safely carry and toss (likely not more than that). Is there a rule for this in the RAW? ...or would such a thing simply be the realm of homebrew. If strictly homebrew, I could see this being accomplished as either a matter of combining 3 "doses" of the stuff in a special, single flask that costs a fair bit of gold... or maybe take a different route entirely and make a higher-end, more damaging concentration of the stuff, with a suitable higher craft DC (maybe DC 30 for 2x Alchemist's Fire and DC 40 for 3x Alchemist's Fire) /shrug |
| tarkin07-12-07, 03:37 PM | First of all, there are some higher DC versions of Alchemist Fire already made. I would not let you get that effect simply by combining them. Second of all, there is no RAW rule allowing any special effect from making more of the stuff. For a House Rule, I strongly suggest: "More = affects a larger area, but does not do more damage or change DC" Liquids run off of people, once you get completely soaked, you pretty much can't get any more soaked. (If I jump in a pool and climb out I am no less wet than someone that jumps in, climbs out, jumps in again and climbs out) It would be insanely stupid to make a vial so small that it could not completely soak a person. The basic vial doseage should already be assumed to be maximal coverage for a person. |

Are there, now? ...where might one find them? If they already exist, that's cool... I don't believe I remember seeing them. A valid option. Though I must admit, I was thinking of Alchemist's Fire a bit differently. Sure, a flask would cover a portion of the person in flaming liquid... but I don't think a single flask would coat the entire person. Thus I figured a double dose, for instance, would coat more surface area of the person, thus hurting them more. ...just how I was thinking of it. |

| equilibrium1707-12-07, 04:38 PM | You ever thown bolas before? The stones tend to hit together some, as you get the swing started. A bolas made of shatterable containers of flammable liquid would probably be nearly as dangerous to the thrower, as the target. |

Gnome or Goblin technology at its finest. ;) hehe ...now if only I could get a book/pg reference to the superior versions (with higher craft DCs) of Alchemist's Fire mentioned above, I'll be moving in the right direction. :) |
| dengarbountyhunter07-12-07, 04:49 PM | If you really need such (house) rules, one that works well (at least in my opinion) is to increase the damage by one size category for each doubling of quantity... |
| tarkin07-12-07, 04:51 PM | You asked about the stronger stuff. There is Long lasting Alchemical Fire, that lasts an extra round, burnign for another 1d6, and it's base save is DC 17instead of 15. From one of the Dragon Magazines. That is the one I always think of as the stronger stuff. |
| DracoPhoenix07-12-07, 05:30 PM | You ever thown bolas before? Sadly no, I don't think my boss would be too impressed :( |
| Pallin Rahl07-12-07, 05:40 PM | Sadly no, I don't think my boss would be too impressed :( How could he be anything but impressed if you take him down in one swift move! ;) ...think of the applause from your fellow employees as you're escorted off the premises after the inevitable firing! :P |
| equilibrium1707-12-07, 06:04 PM | Sadly no, I don't think my boss would be too impressed :( Well, I wasn't suggesting you try them at work. Bolas are easy to make; they're just ropes with weights on the end. And you can find videos of the throwing technique on the web. I will not, however, suggest giving a go at making your own bolas and teaching yourself how to throw them, though. If I did, I would probably be opening myself up to all sort of liability. If you decide to give a go of your own accord, I strongly reccommend a helmet and plenty of open space. It's very easy to ding yourself on the head if you don't know what you're doing, and your first few throws can be VERY wild. Learn from my pain. :embarrass |
| mvincent07-12-07, 06:26 PM | Note that being immersed in (say) acid does 10 times the normal damage. If you could establish someway to effectively immerse someone in a liquid, I would allow for 10 times damage (but you would need about 20 to 50 times the normal dosage). The shrink item spell, bag of holding, or dust of dryness might be possible ways to accomplish this. |
| Pallin Rahl07-12-07, 06:41 PM | Again... it's not my intent to drown the target in Alchemist's Fire. :P |
| DracoPhoenix07-13-07, 03:48 AM | How about just adding +5DC and +5g to the craft check / crafting materials cost (not market price)? |
